1Password is looking for a Sr. Accountant, Tax to join our growing tax team. This role will report to the Sr. Director of Tax, and will be responsible for all our global indirect tax compliance filings (especially in Canada and the US), including but not limited to sales and use tax, GST, HST, QST, PST & VAT Tax filings and reconciliations. In addition, the Senior Accountant, Tax will support management to ensure compliance with various Canadian provincial and US state requirements and will assist with tax research to provide technical support on all indirect tax matters. This role will partner with operations, finance, IT, legal and external advisors to address complex sales tax issues. The Sr. Accountant, Tax, will play a key role in maintaining compliance with tax laws on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis as needed, supporting financial reporting and providing valuable insights to optimize our overall tax position.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:

    • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience with corporate indirect tax related compliance and preparer processes at a public accounting firm and/or corporate tax department. 
    • Strong technical knowledge of Canadian and US tax laws and regulations (indirect tax) (CPA preferred but not required). 
    • Exposure and experience with international VAT/GST issues preferred. 
    • Technological competency, specifically related to reporting and compliance, including NetSuite, and Avalara. 
    • Advanced knowledge of Excel, including pivot tables, sumifs, v-lookups and index formulas.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including cross functionally. 
    • Effective communication skills to interact with various stakeholders demonstrating an ability to communicate complex tax issues in a clear and understandable manner to internal and external stakeholders.

What you can expect:

    • You can expect to be part of a global tax team, assisting in not only Canadian and US tax but also International. 
    • Prepare and file all indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax and personal property tax; assist with other non-income tax related filings as needed.
    • Coordinate with various departments to collect information and prepare and/or oversee sales and VAT/GST use filings and associated payments. Liaise with outside preparers of VAT/GST tax returns to ensure timely and accurate compliance. 
    • Organize raw data into appropriate format to facilitate proper (accurate and timely) filing of indirect tax returns. Reconcile sales/use tax payments and revenue information to trial balance monthly. 
    • Ensure compliance with local tax laws related to property tax filings and ensure payments are made in a timely manner. 
    • Ensure accurate preparation of supporting tax return workpapers. 
    • Prepare financial analyses to support Tax Department projects as needed. 
    • Assist with other tax related projects as needed. 
    • Assist senior tax professionals with assessment of reporting requirements related to indirect tax returns. 
    • Assist senior tax professionals with tax research related to US and Canadian indirect taxes. 
    • Assist senior tax professionals with collection of information for sales tax and other tax audits. 
    • Establish and maintain a consolidated compliance calendar for all indirect tax jurisdictions. 
    • Reconcile various sales tax reports with monthly sales data and general ledger; perform journal entries related to indirect taxes. 
    • Investigate and resolve tax notices received. 
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures supporting best practices around transaction taxes.
    • Monitor changes in sales tax rates to ensure that updated rates are effectively communicated, implemented, and validated; support multistate sales and use tax audits and tax controversy.
USA-based roles only: The Annual base salary for this role is between $94,000 USD and $127,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.

Canada-based roles only: The Annual base salary for this role is between $88,000 CAD and $118,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
