About 1Password
At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Extended Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 165,000 businesses and millions of people trust us to provide seamless, secure access to their most critical information.
If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.
As an Engineering Manager on our Data Security team, you’ll lead a group of talented Software Developers and Security Engineers working on some of the most complex, high-impact challenges in applied cryptography. Your team is at the heart of building the secure foundations that power every 1Password product — from designing new cryptographic systems to preparing for a post-quantum future.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product and Security Engineering to shape a multi-year security roadmap, bring emerging technologies to market, and ensure that security at 1Password scales with our growth. You’ll also play a key role in hiring, mentoring, and growing a team of deeply technical subject matter experts.
Millions of people rely on 1Password every day. Join us to help make security not just stronger — but more accessible, human, and scalable.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
- A strong background in data security, ideally in applied cryptography. This could include experience such as:
- Implementing modern symmetric or asymmetric cryptographic algorithms
- Building or integrating digital signature schemes and hash functions
- Delivering key management systems, key distribution protocols, or working with hardware security modules
- Identifying and mitigating real-world security vulnerabilities and attack vectors
- You’ve managed or technically led a team of developers and owned application development from planning to delivery.
- You bring hands-on engineering experience and have tackled complex, ambiguous problems through code.
- You use your technical background to coach developers and elevate team performance.
- You’ve led cross-functional projects that span multiple systems, teams, or architectural layers.
- You create a positive, inclusive team environment where people feel supported, challenged, and energized.
- You make thoughtful decisions — even with limited information — and guide your team through tough trade-offs.
- You’re not afraid to get into the technical weeds when needed to unblock or accelerate progress.
- You drive delivery and long-term planning, shaping roadmaps that balance execution with strategic goals.
- You communicate clearly across disciplines, balancing security best practices with business needs.
Bonus points for:
- Experience with post-quantum cryptography (e.g., lattice-based algorithms) in theory or practice
- Familiarity with evolving cryptographic standards and bodies (e.g., NIST), and how they shape implementation decisions
What you can expect:
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of engineers in a culture of innovation, execution, and collaboration.
- Scope, prioritize, and plan impactful security initiatives in partnership with your team.
- Drive high-quality execution through iterative delivery, velocity, and clear communication.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership within your team and across engineering.
- Build and support a diverse, inclusive team where people grow and thrive.
- Help scale a specialized team by refining hiring, onboarding, and growth practices in partnership with fellow EMs.
- Even if you don't tick all these boxes, we want to hear from you. We understand that everyone's experiences are unique.
- The most important thing you can bring to this job is the drive to dive in, get the work done, and fix root causes instead of treating symptoms. We believe in continuous learning and support professional development on the job with a budget to back it up. If you bring a desire to do the right thing for our customers, a sense of ownership over the product you work on, and a focus on shipping quality code, we want to hear from you.

We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.
We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work.
