We all have important information we need to manage, and protecting it should be easy. Over 150,000 businesses and millions of people log in to 1Password to unlock smart, simple access to everything they care about. Our vision is to create a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, and our culture values simplicity, honesty and a human-centric approach to solving problems. Come help us unlock peace of mind so everyone can stay safer online.

We’re looking for an experienced leader of leaders to support our teams and EMs in this space and help us shape the way we serve the next 100,000 businesses & enterprises.

The role will be supporting two teams each led by an engineering manager that you will support directly. Both teams work on a similar domain, focusing on the B2B adoption of 1Password products throughout our customers’ organizations and building everything from the Administration experience, to large scale enterprise-wide rollouts and migrations to 1Password. As 1Password adds more products to its suite and continues to serve larger and larger customers, there is a lot of potential for growth in this area.

As the Senior Engineering Manager supporting these two teams, you’ll be responsible for the health and direction of the teams and products they build. You will partner with your engineering teams, their Product Managers, their Designers to create a strategy and set the direction for your domain, manage and support the personal development of your EMs and most senior ICs, and ensure the teams have what they need to successfully deliver the right products on time. You’ll be supported by your Director of Engineering and will be working closely with cross-functional leaders from Product, Design, Engineering, GTM and Customer Support, spanning time zones from the West Coast to Europe.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. You will be expected to be fully remote, ideally in the Eastern Time Zone, as well as periodic travel to meet up with leaders for on-sites.

What we're looking for:

    • At least 5 years in a people leadership role, including 1-2 years of managing managers, within SaaS/tech industry
    • Experience leading multiple teams, including managers and software engineers (2+ managers directly, 15+ people indirectly), as well as successfully delivering projects/features that span multiple teams.
    • Track record of building and developing multiple engineering teams that exhibit strong ownership, customer focus, and engineering excellence.
    • Successfully hired or trained up other managers and Staff+ ICs. Performance managed and managed out managers or ICs.
    • Able to effectively collaborate, influence, and negotiate with peers and stakeholders in Engineering as well as cross functionally in other orgs to ensure alignment and understanding across many levels of the company.
    • Experience establishing the direction and strategy of multiple teams, driving positive scale and growth for teams outside of your own and building roadmaps 6-12 months out.
    • Demonstrated ability to participate in technical discussions, ask hard questions, and ensure your teams are making the right technical decisions; lead and understand the work that is going on in your teams. You use these experiences to empower the team to make tough technical decisions themselves.
    • Bonus points for familiarity with some of the following tech stack and languages: Typescript / React, Golang, Rust, SQL databases, Redis, AWS, & RESTful APIs and an understanding of cryptography.
    • We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, even if you don't tick every box for the skills we've listed. Diversity of experience and background leads to a stronger team, and we recognize that talent comes in many forms and that skills can be gained in various ways. If you're excited about the role and willing to learn, we still encourage you to apply.

What you can expect:

    • Lead Through Others: As a manager of managers, you build up leaders on the team and lead through them. You rarely get stuck in the weeds organizing the execution of projects yourself.
    • Set Direction & Drive Outcomes: Work with your Engineering Director and counterparts in Product & Design to determine strategy for your teams,  planning product strategy & roadmaps, org structure, and technical architecture for this year and next. Identify strategic initiatives, establish desired outcomes and measurable key results, and successfully empower your managers to deliver them.
    • Set Direction, Manage on Outcomes, Risks, & Capabilities: Ensure you, your leader, and the leaders you support are aligned on direction. Manage outcomes, risks & capabilities, ensuring your teams have what they need to execute successfully and raising it early when they don’t so we can solve for that.
    • XFN Collaboration: Collaborate and coordinate across teams and functions to ensure technical, product, and business objectives are met.
    • Org Planning: Plan your org structure and headcount in advance, organizing your teams so they are set up to successfully deliver the business outcomes we’re looking for. Solve for skill gaps or capacity challenges.
    • Healthy Organization: you build a healthy organization where your people feel supported, the teams and the individuals are delivering impact, people are accountable, and high performers are retained and underperformers are improved or exited.
