We promise you can be yourself at Protolabs

Don’t meet every single requirement? Go ahead and apply anyway! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification and we think this sucks. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and we are committed to building a diverse team that feels that they are valued in the workplace. If you’re looking at our page and you do not identify yourself, don't be discouraged to apply. You can help make our Protolabs even better. We do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, age, mental or physical ability, or any way you represent yourself. We strongly believe diversity makes for more successful teams and it's one of our biggest secrets of success.

We are transforming the manufacturing industry and are on the lookout for the makers, the doers and the re-thinkers!

Protolabs Network provides engineers and designers access to more than 250 extensively vetted manufacturing partners. As part of Protolabs’ global services, we specialize in on-demand 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding and sheet metal fabrication. Trusted by some of the most innovative companies in the world (NASA, HP, Audi and more), we are the world’s fastest and most comprehensive digital manufacturing solution. Some of the parts we’ve produced are even floating in space!

We’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer (Python) to join our In-House Tooling team. At Protolabs Network, the In-House Tooling team is on a mission to revolutionize our workflow and efficiency as we grow. Facing the challenges of expansion, our teams innovated by creating unique, albeit disjointed, tools to streamline operations. This has showed the critical need for unified and standardized solutions to keep pace with our dynamic environment.

As a member of the team, you'll be heavily involved in the development of the Protolabs Network Control Hub—a centralized admin portal designed to streamline and oversee all operations conducted by our internal users.

We are looking for a pragmatic problem solver who will thrive in a dynamic environment and uses tech to find solutions to both simple and complex business problems.

Our tech stack: Python (FastApi, SQLAlchemy, Celery, flask-legacy), PostgreSQL/Aurora, Docker, K8s, AWS (EC2, ECS, RDS, S3, Redshift), Knative, Retool, Zapier

Sounds interesting? Apply now!

What you'll do:

    • As a Backend Engineer in the team, you'll be partnering with the Full-stack Engineer to build the foundations of the systems that will power our Protolabs Network Control Hub
    • You'll be building APIs, designing data models, maintaining Backend code, and scaling production systems. You know, normal Backend stuff
    • Approach problems with curiosity and a mindset to ask questions to build the best product
    • Own features end to end, working cross-functionally with stakeholders to find elegant solutions to complex and interesting problems
    • Design and implement solutions in collaboration with other engineers from your team but also cross-team projects
    • Maintain the quality of the product by following best practices but also implementing different levels of the testing pyramid
    • Improve the developer experience by implementing tools or practices to make your and fellow engineers’ lives easier
    • Collaborate with our Backend guild to set standards and improve the state of our Backend systems

What it takes:

    • 3+ years of experience building web applications and backend services*
    • Experience working in a full-stack environment
    • Strong coding skills with Python or similar
    • A solid understanding of how to design, develop, test, and monitor production backend systems
    • Experience with relational databases like PostgreSQL or similar
    • Familiarity working with Docker, K8s
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
    • Bonus:
    • Working knowledge of NodeJS
    • Familiarity with DevOps practices and working in CI/CD environments
    • Understanding of RabbitMQ, Event Based Architecture
    • Familiarity with Frontend frameworks like Angular

What to expect in the hiring process

Initial call
Kick-off with an initial screening with one Talent Acquisition Partners, not really an interview, but the chance to learn more about how we do things, our process and a chance for you to ask all the things you want to know

Hiring Manager
A deeper dive into the role, what we're looking for and for you to get to know one another

Take home challenge or presentation
Put your skills to the test. Depending on the role, you may be asked to work on a take-home challenge or a presentation to us. We know this won't show us all of your talents, but we can get a nice insight into how you work and vice versa.

Team Meeting
In most scenarios, you’ll get to meet your teammates or a member of the leadership team. This is a great chance for us to see how you fit into the wider organisation

Meet the culture ambassadors

We want to hear all about the things that get you out of bed each morning, the special interests you have or random skills that you can teach us. Now's the time to show us your authentic self, no holding back. This is also your chance to ask about the behaviours that make us who we are, warts and all - because hiring is a two-way street!
