We are looking for an experienced Software Developer in Test to join our Quality Assurance Engineering team, so we sat down with Gabriel Cociș - who’s hiring for this particular role - to learn more about it and about the impact this new team member can expect to have as part of the team.

Q: Gabi, to get us started, can you give me a quick walk through what the team does?
The core responsibility of the team that this new colleague will be joining is to deliver quality through test automation and test process management for microservices to the purpose of delivering value to end-users as quickly and safely as possible.

Q: I see. And how do they achieve that?
That’s achieved via a wide range of activities, but to give you the highlights - the team is mainly involved in performing end-to-end testing around the applications under test (so system testing), implementing, running and analyzing performance tests on the critical components (e.g. load, stress, and soak) and of course they’re also involved in troubleshooting, analyzing, isolating and reporting defects.

Q: What about this role that you’re now hiring for, what’s the contribution this new team member can expect to have as part of the team?
They will of course engage in all of the activities that the team performs so as to ensure further development of the sets of tests we use for the microservices that power our platform-level recording and storage solution, which is used by almost all of 8x8’s products.

Q: That sounds quite impressive and I can see why you would want someone with a fair amount of experience in this role. And what can this new team member expect to do day-to-day? Can you maybe dive a little deeper into that?
Of course! So, let me start by saying that this person will take part in all the application development life-cycle phases as per the agreed Test Strategy. They will test and certify features for releases, they will plan, write, execute, and refactor manual and automated test cases, identify, record, document and thoroughly track bugs, perform code reviews and also address code for review.

Q: What about your expectations from this team member, what would be the key thing for you?
I see what you’re doing there. :) To answer your question, given that this team member would be involved in clarifying product-related unknowns, the first thing I would most like to see is eagerness to learn our business and to get familiar with the product. Equally, they would be trusted to help coordinate the testing activities for the team, which means they would need to stay in touch with the project stakeholders at all times and have outstanding communication skills (in English and in Romanian).

Q: I see. And what skills are you looking for?
As this is a senior position, the team and I are looking for someone with very good expertise in QA terms, standards, strategies and procedures, who’s well-versed in back-end testing (service level/ API), familiar with various design and architectural patterns in test automation (UI, API, Performance, E2E), has proven experience with building - or contributing to - test automation frameworks (BE and FE), has relevant experience with Performance testing and a working knowledge of API testing tools (e.g. Postman, Insomnia).

Q: What about skills related to automation - is there something in particular that you are looking for?
Indeed, this role is very much focused on automation, this colleague will be trusted with writing reusable Java code using testing frameworks (such as REST Assured, JUnit,  Selenium WebDriver, Cucumber, etc.) so a good knowledge of Java (or other OOP languages) and of its ecosystems is required.

Q: Any ‘icing on the cake’?
Oh, the inescapable question. :)) Since you’re asking, a Clean Code Evangelist who’s also familiar with Docker would make us very happy indeed.
