We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Engineer to lead the migration of our client's SQL Server backend to Databricks and support the development of a new semantic layer. This role will be playing a key part in the proof of concept (POC) phase, evaluating and selecting the appropriate technologies for building the semantic layer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, basic knowledge of Databricks, and strong expertise in building semantic layers.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Lead the migration of the existing SQL Server backend to Databricks, ensuring data integrity and performance optimization.
- Collaborate with the project team to design and implement a new semantic layer, replacing Microsoft Analysis Services (SSAS).
- Support the POC process by evaluating the chosen technologies as potential solutions for the new semantic layer.
- Build the semantic layer, employing the data modeling skills and dimensional data modeling knowledge.
- Create optimized data pipelines to build the semantic layer from the underlying Databricks tables.
- Provide guidance and best practices for data architecture and data modeling
- Work closely with data analyst/ BI developer to ensure that the new semantic layer meets reporting and analytical requirements.
Hard Skills - Must have:
- Strong data engineering background with a focus on SQL Server and modern cloud data platforms (such as Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, Fabric etc.)
- Good understanding of semantic layer for data consumption , and experience modeling data in the semantic layer.
- Strong SQL skills, with experience building compex SQL scripts and procedures, and deploying data pipelines using them
- Basic knowledge of Databricks, and how data is stored, organized and orchestrated in this tool.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on performance tuning database queries, optimizing tables/views and data quality
- Good knowledge of dimension modeling (e.g. Star Schema and/or Snowflake Schema)
- Knowledge of BI tools like Power BI and their integration with semantic layers.
Hard Skills - Nice to have/It's a plus:
- Understanding of semantic layer technologies, including SSAS and alternatives like Microsoft Fabric, AtScale, or Cube.dev.PowerBI
- Experience conducting POCs and evaluating new technologies.
