Bustle Digital Group (“BDG”) is seeking a Deputy Fashion Editor to lead TZR’s fashion vertical with brand-distinguishing, forward thinking, and timely content that informs and intrigues the reader. The ideal candidate is vibrant, driven, and strategic, always thinking ahead and beyond the conventions of fashion media. As digital media evolves, so must the person in this role, agile and adaptable to the pace and demands of the medium while looking for fresh and new ways to cover trends, style, and shopping.

Honing in on TZR's unique positioning within the media landscape, the editor will conceptualize story ideas that will inspire and resonate with readers, and execute those ideas to fruition in an organized and effective manner. The vertical lead will steer the dedicated fashion issues, fashion month coverage, and fashion-related tentpoles and initiatives, ensuring fresh takes on topics and overseeing the timeline of each project.

As the head of the department, the editor will be adept at managing the lineup and a team of on-staff editors and freelance writers while fulfilling administrative tasks in a timely manner. The candidate will be an effective communicator, organized, a problem-solver, and resilient when faced with challenges. The ability to manage short- and long-term deadlines simultaneously is pivotal, and editing, assigning, and writing features should be like second nature.

In addition to having a solid knowledge of fashion — from historical references to current internet culture — the editor is avidly reading up on the latest feature from notable writers and critics, emerging newsletters, to posts from influential social media figures, keeping abreast of the culture and conversation within the industry.Ensuring a diverse POV across the vertical must be a priority for this editor — seeking out a range of contributors, sources, and talent to highlight, the content should reflect the diversity of the audience.

This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between BDG Media, Inc. and the Writers Guild of America East.

Key Accountabilities:

    • Assign, edit, and publish 12 fashion features a week
    • Manage a team of editors and freelance writers 
    • Keep a finger on the pulse of all things industry via social media, brand relationships, active research, press releases, and exclusive announcements via your professional network
    • Attend relevant industry events, with an eye for on-site or social coverage opportunities
    • Closely monitor analytics tools to track performance, and adjust weekly and monthly strategy accordingly
    • Constantly brainstorm with writers and fellow editors on methods to deliver feature content in exciting and creative ways
    • Work closely with team members during tentpole events, such as awards season and fashion month
    • Ease with working with members from other departments to achieve cross-functional goals

Candidate Profile

    • 6-8+ years of fashion writing and editing experience in digital media
    • A solid network of contacts in the industry from major brands/agencies to emerging ones as well
    • Experience managing a team of editors and writers
    • Ability to ideate, pitch, write and edit quickly
    • Keen understanding and advanced knowledge of best practices for search and social
    • Ability to write and edit larger feature stories thoroughly, keeping the brand’s voice and integrity intact 
    • Ease in attending events and networking with key players in the industry while representing the company
    • Passionate about being the first to know what is happening in the fashion industry
