Job Brief
The Plant Engineer on the Engineering team will be responsible for pilot level operations of hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical equipment. Tasks will involve evaluation and modifications of equipment and operational procedures as necessary. Providing support for technicians to operate equipment and gather necessary samples and measurements. This position reports to the Director, Engineering Project Management.
This role is based in Oakland, California and must be worked as an on-site position.
Key Focus Areas of the role may include:
- Assemble and operate Unit Operation scale pilot equipment, including tanks, pumps, mixers, screw feeders, filters, kilns, and emissions control systems.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures with support of the discipline engineers for operation of pilot scale equipment and larger.
- Collaboration with process teams to develop pilot operational test plans with a focus on technical derisking for scale-up activities.
- Analytical testing of material samples according to company established methods on industry standard equipment.
- Develop and maintain inventory of spares for equipment.
- Cross training in relevant pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical evaluations.
- Steward of employee and environmental safety through cross collaboration with team members.
- Development and execution of sampling plans and compilation of analytical measurement data.
For this role, we’re looking for:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering.
- 2+ years equivalent experience in a plant or startup environment.
- Experience with pilot scale equipment, both manually and control system operated.
- Experience with safe process sampling techniques, sample preparation, and analysis of samples using XRD, XRF, and ICP.
- Experience with fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemical conversion calculations as it pertains to single unit operations.
- Experience with Hydrometallurgical or Pyrometallurgical equipment.
- High temperature equipment (>1000°C) such as Rotary Kilns, Fluidized Beds, or spray roasters.
- Solid and liquid separations techniques: filtration, settling, clarification, product washing, drying
- Ability to travel periodically
Additional skills that are preferred but not required:
- Experience with building permitting requirements
- Experience with a control system platform used in an industrial environment
- Experience with emissions compliance
- Experience with conducting equipment maintenance
- Design experience with CAD with a focus on machine improvements and guarding.

- Salary range for this role is $125,000 – 145,000 per year
