Job Brief

The Process R&D Engineer on the Pyrometallurgy team will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of some of the pilot plant pyrometallurgical unit operations. They will assist with the assembly of pilot and auxiliary infrastructure and support pilot plant equipment commissioning. They will contribute to bench-scale R&D, as needed, and support material characterization. This position reports to the Senior Engineer, Pyrometallurgy.

This role is based in Oakland, California and is an on-site position.

Key Focus Areas of the role may include:

    • Assemble mechanical systems and conduct low voltage electrical work 
    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot pilot plant equipment, including kilns
    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot bench scale equipment
    • Contribute to process and efficiency improvements
    • Prepare and handle bulk materials for testing or analysis 
    • Analyze products through dry and wet characterization methods, including TGA, DSC, XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, BET, PSA, ICP, ICS 
    • Data collection, QC, and analysis
    • Compile data into technical reports and presentations
    • Collaborate closely with engineering team on reactor design and scale up

For this role, we’re looking for:

    • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, or equivalent
    • A minimum of 2-3 years in industrial or heavy research and development setting (pilot or commercial plant)
    • Prior experience with the assembly, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of pilot or commercial production equipment 
    • Strong understanding of technical and logistical aspects of equipment operation
    • Bias for action and ability to deliver creative solutions to technical problems 
    • Attentive to detail and safety 
    • Comfortable standing for extended duration and working with hand tools 
    • Excited about learning and growing in a fast paced environment 
    • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time

Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

    • Experience operating burner systems
    • Proficient with forming and machining tools and techniques

    • Salary range for this role is $100,000 - 120,000 per year
