Full-Time
Carbon Direct is decarbonizing the global economy.

What is Carbon Direct?
We are a team of scientists, engineers, and innovators with a shared goal of reducing atmospheric CO2 by scaling carbon management.

What do we do?
We operate two distinct businesses:
- Advisory & Software: We work with Fortune 500 corporate clients like Microsoft, Shopify, and Alaska Airlines to develop long-term carbon management plans. We’re also building a platform to facilitate the procurement, purchasing, and monitoring of carbon removals, helping make net zero emissions a reality for all businesses.
- Investments: We scale the supply of quality removals by investing in high-potential technologies vetted by science-backed sourcing and diligence.

The science is clear: we need to pair CO2 emission reductions with removals to limit global temperatures to 1.5C, and the time to act is now. Our 40+ leading scientists have expertise in all areas of carbon management, from carbon footprinting to carbon removal procurement, and their insight guides our work.

Our team is data-centric, diverse, and purpose-driven. Join us on one of the greatest journeys of our lifetimes: the transition to net-zero.

The Role

We’re looking for a Head of Climate Justice to lead efforts to further embed climate equity and environmental justice principles into our culture, operations, and client engagements - someone who is deeply passionate about climate equity and environmental justice and has demonstrated experience with solutions and policies addressing the intersection of climate change, systemic racism, diversity and inclusion and/or social justice. The ideal candidate is also knowledgeable about carbon markets and climate finance, and interested in carbon removal. This new position is an investment in our continuing commitment to climate equity and environmental justice and augments our existing work in this space.

Core Responsibilities

    • Develop and maintain a climate equity and environmental justice learning curriculum to be presented to our world-class advisory clients.
    • Represent Carbon Direct in external forums that intersect between environmental justice and climate solutions, specifically carbon removal, capture and utilization and related strategies.
    • Strengthen Carbon Direct’s capacity to identify policy and practices that center communities most impacted by environmental injustice and the climate crisis.
    • Support the evolution and on-going implementation of climate equity and environmental justice evaluation methodology for Carbon Direct investments.
    • Lead and support various internal-focused climate justice committees and drive objectives such as learning sessions and on-site visits.
    • Participate in relevant policy/rulemaking processes and advocacy across jurisdictions working to implement carbon management solutions to ensure climate justice principles are incorporated.
    • Provide leadership and subject-matter expertise to the development of innovative policies, programming, and capacity-building strategies that address current and historic environmental injustice and that make impacted communities safe, healthy, and whole.
    • Work with our Head of Marketing and lead development of our external communication around climate equity and environmental justice.
    • Assist with efforts to secure sources of funding for initiatives related to climate equity and environmental justice.

Experience

    • Climate Equity and Environmental Justice Expertise - A deep understanding of issues relating to climate change, environmental pollutants, and resiliency and their points of intersection with social justice and civil rights concerns; Familiarity with targeted policy and program interventions that address the environmental health hazards that disproportionately burden lower-wealth and communities of color; An awareness of power-building strategies that enable residents of impacted communities to participate as co-creators in the development and implementation of interventions to meet local needs.
    • Business Understanding - An understanding of the ways finance and climate action intersect and ideas for how to apply environmental justice principles to business interests.
    • Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into accessible forms and adapt styles to diverse audiences and different cultural environments.
    • Policy - In-depth understanding of the policymaking process; Demonstrated experience analyzing and interpreting legislative and regulatory language.
    • Research and Data Analysis - Well-versed in sifting through a vast array of informational resources and producing products (written or digital) that harvest meaningful insights.
    • Collaboration and Building Relationships - Relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences; Demonstrated experience (professional or non-professional) building and maintaining relationships with low-wealth and community of color communities and executing projects involving multiple constituencies.

Location

    • For this role, we welcome remote employees. We have teams based in the New York, San Francisco, and Seattle metropolitan areas and opportunities to meet for in-person collaboration.
Benefits

Carbon Direct has a flexible, remote-friendly culture and we support our employees with their remote work set-up needs.

We also offer a competitive benefits package including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, voluntary 401k contributions, paid parental leave, and generous paid time off.
