The Role
Complex NTWRK is seeking a freelance Copy Editor to join the editorial team. The Copy Editor will edit multiple stories per day, serving as the final editorial check before copy goes into Complex’s content management system for publication. The ideal candidate is someone who has a background in copy editing with a high level of attention to detail and knowledge of the space Complex thrives within. We’re looking for someone who knows if it’s K-Dot or K. Dot, Aimé Leon Dore or Aime Leon Dore, Lebron or LeBron.
Who You Are
- Minimum of 2 years of copy editing experience at a website, newspaper, or magazine.
- Familiarity with AP style and knowledge of Complex’s tone, style, and standards.
- A deep understanding of the Complex brand and subjects covered.
- The ability to work through copy with consistency and in a timely manner.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Google Drive.
What You'll Do
- Proofread written content in adherence to Complex’s Style Guide.
- Verify facts, dates, and statistics cited in the content to ensure accuracy.
- Edit news and features articles on a daily basis, taking deadlines and priority into consideration.
- Communicate with editorial team members if questions arise while copy editing stories.
- Conduct thorough proofreading to identify and correct any remaining errors or inconsistencies.
- Rewrite or rephrase sentences and paragraphs to improve clarity, readability, and overall quality.
- Collaborate with writers and content creators to develop engaging headlines, subheadings, and captions.
$22 - $25 an hour
The Pay Range for this position is listed. Actual pay will vary based on factors including, but not limited to experience and performance. The range listed is just one component of Complex's Total Rewards offerings for employees.
