At Heirloom, we are building out a team of engineers to remove 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2035. In this role, you will work closely with a cross functional team to define and design the manufacturing system that builds the world's most cost-effective direct air capture system using natural processes combined with industrial automation.  We are looking for someone who has experience in and is excited about the task of defining our manufacturing process and integrating the equipment needed.
The Role
At Heirloom, we are working to remove 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2035 with the world’s most cost-effective direct air capture system. In this role you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and research scientists to define and design aspects of our approach, which uses natural processes combined with industrial automation. We are looking for someone who has experience in and is excited about the task of leading the conceptualization, design, build, and deployment of complex systems.

What you'll do

    • Work in an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management that focuses on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their life cycles.
    • Serve as the connective tissue between our design, manufacturing, operations, and research teams.
    • Discover the real problems that need to be solved, identify the most probable or highest impact failures that can occur, and brainstorm creative mitigations to the identified risks.
    • Define product modules that can be designed, built, and tested as independent systems.
    • Define success criteria and metrics for internally designed equipment and processes.
    • Generate system concepts and definitions based on observational data and analytical results produced by our research team.
    • Perform discrete event simulation to understand and define requirements for product module throughput, equipment reliability, buffer sizing, and material flow requirements.
    • Drive system level analysis to consider trade-offs between function, deployment time, operational costs, and capital investment.

What we're looking for experience in

    • BS / MS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
    • 5+ years professional experience in design-for-manufacturing and lean manufacturing principles, as well as design-for-construction and familiarity with construction means and methods, with an emphasis on modularity.
    • Ability to take an observational and analytical approach to problem definition.
    • Someone with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to take complex problems and break them down into actionable steps.
    • Demonstrated success across multiple industries, product types, and product life cycles. 


    • Experience in industrial chemical processes.
    • Process simulation experience in Aspen or equivalent.
    • System simulation experience in Anylogic or equivalent.
