The Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI)is a nonprofit research organization advancing protein science to accelerate research and improve human health. Founded in 2017 by Harvard Medical School professors Tim Springer and Andrew Kruse, we are located in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.
The Institute’s three-pronged approach is to build protein tools, conduct related internal research, and develop educational programs for the protein science and broad biological research communities. With a significant endowment, IPI uniquely combines the freedom of academia with the high throughput and scale of industry to take on transformative projects. IPI has built a robust platform for discovering, developing, and distributing synthetic antibodies and other protein tools to share with the biomedical community. The Institute's deep protein expertise, collaborative spirit and research tools are powering new biomedical and therapeutic discoveries with a growing community of researchers at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital and across Greater Boston, and beyond.
Job Overview
The Antibody Discovery leader will play an essential role in the discovery—by display platforms— of IPI’s human synthetic antibodies, produced for a wide range of cell surface receptors and ligands. IPI’s flagship project aims to create well-characterized, high-quality antibodies—with high therapeutic and diagnostic potential—for all human cell surface receptors and their ligands. The successful candidate will be a key leader of the Antibody Discovery Team that develops antibody fragment display libraries and applies technologies to discover antibodies that bind to antigens produced by the Protein Production Team.
The individual will have proven experience in antibody library design, yeast and/or phage display, yeast (and/or phage) genetics, cell sorting and synthetic biology techniques. The Director will collaborate closely with the other Antibody Platform members and contribute to a wide array of biological discovery projects. Strong communication skills are needed to facilitate the engagement of IPI with outside collaborators to translate their biological questions into novel protein reagents, sharing them with the larger research community.
Responsibilities
● Develop new antibody libraries for cell display to enable complementary techniques for antibody discovery
● Design and perform antibody display discovery in high-throughput approaches
● Establish standard operating protocols for cell sorting techniques to systematically obtain antibodies for a diverse range of antigens
● Produce publication-quality data analysis on sorting experiments
● Strategize how different sorting protocols may result in binders for protein complexes as well as their components
● Participate in meetings and conferences to engage and recruit outside research groups to participate in IPI’s antibody discovery activities
● Supervise research associates and interact with colleagues within the Antibody Platform to enable highly efficient antibody discovery campaigns
Qualifications
● PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field
● Experience working with display platforms for synthetic antibody discovery, including significant involvement in display library design and characterization
● Experience with sophisticated molecular biology engineering methods
● Familiarity with the kinetics of protein/protein interactions
● Enthusiastic team worker with strong engagement in tool development for the life sciences
