Our Mercedes-Benz Research and Development, Long Beach, CA office is seeking an Associate Defect Analyst to join our Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems team.

As a testing and validation team passionate about developing safe, high performing, intuitive advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems, we are looking for a new teammate that aligns with those goals. This role supports the development of the future generations of Mercedes-Benz products and technologies, including our next generation of EV models.

The responsibility of this role is to support Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (AD/ADAS) testing to test, evaluate, and drive local market improvements of the AD/ADAS systems in the USA and Canadian Markets for Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles. The focus of this role is to perform root cause analysis of overall system performance issues in order to identify the likely sub-system responsible software or component issue failure. This role will analyze, document, report, and track these faults for USA and Canada testing activities.

Job Responsibilities:

    • USA and Canadian-market focused testing of Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems:
    • Systematically evaluate the performance of AD/ADAS systems, with a focus on US-market specific conditions. Review collected measurement data to identify, analyze, and document potential issues found during testing.
    • Review all system faults with first level analysis for root cause and defect routing.
    • Track open faults, provide support to functional owners for further fault analysis, and defect fix confirmation.
    • Maintain a fault tracking system, showing current defect status, responsible party, and fix plan and timing.
    • Follow-up with responsible functional owners to track fixes back to SW releases and make sure tickets are being closed in a timely manner, and escalating where necessary.
    • Summarize faults and findings into summary reports, which need frequent updates. Submit to responsible departments in a systematic and timely manner. Provide Release Recommendation reports as required, based on system performance in the local market.
    • Actively work on process development and continuous improvement.

    • Other responsibilities of this role could include:
    • Technical contributions for all USA and Canadian-market topics to support the related development departments for local market adaptations. This can include system specification reviews and revisions, certification and regulatory reviews. This includes both SAE Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Level-3 Automated Driving projects and responsibilities.
    • An understanding of competitive AD/ADAS systems in the US-market, including system attributes, system performance, and driver feedback and monitoring performance. Utilize this knowledge to review and judge Mercedes-Benz product performance objectively and subjectively compared to competitive systems, and provide feedback and actionable improvements to development departments.
    • Create component and system performance specifications based on unique USA market road and infrastructure conditions, traffic conditions, driver behaviors, or customer expectations.
    • Update and maintain SW and HW on dedicated test vehicle to both released and pre-released levels. The ability to flash ECUs, calibrate sensors, and perform ECU readouts is required.
    • Update and maintain the vehicle measurement equipment to ensure proper operation at all times.
    • Support other engineering teams as needed and to stay informed of feature development, issues, and release status for AD/ADAS systems.

    • Communication and Reporting:
    • Keep regular communication with internal and external departments in order to stay informed on regularly shifting timelines related to all previously mentioned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's of Science Degree, preferably in Engineering (computer, computer science, mechatronics, electrical, mechanical, etc).
    • 1-2 years of experience.
    • AD/ADAS Knowledge: Knowledge of Automated Driving and Driver Assistance Systems. Knowledge of competitor systems and all AD/ADAS sensor technologies.
    • Automotive Development Knowledge: Understanding of vehicle development process. The ability to analyze and interpret diagnostic and fault measurements to trouble shoot issues.
    • Project Management Skills: Ability to coordinate across multiple departments in order to deliver on-time results in a dynamic environment.
    • Organizational and Leadership Skills: Ability to organize tasks and report task status clearly and efficiently to our team, stake-holder departments, and management as needed.
    • Interpersonal and Team skills: Experience in intercultural environment. Must be able to independently build-up working relationships with intra-company expert departments in Germany.
    • Ability to travel up to 10% including domestic and international business trips and test drives. This includes test trips that could require overnight and weekend travel.
    • Driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Ability to test drive vehicles and pass Daimler driver T2 level certification that evaluates the driver’s control of the vehicle dynamics at limit-handling conditions.
