The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.

Supervise and manage the implementation of operational and procedural directives of the Emissions Testing Laboratory to provide its customers with the premier testing capabilities in an efficient and cost effective manner.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Plan to build in test program flexibility, by scheduling laboratory emission testing processes, programs, and activities, in accordance with prevailing regulations, to obtain necessary data and information which ensure the receipt and retention of vehicle certificates throughout the lifecycle of Mercedes-Benz products.
    • Collaborate with internal and external clients (eg. Redford Powertrain Department, Daimler AG, etc) by researching and developing seamless testing and like processes that contribute to the Certification and Compliance of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the U.S. market.
    • Cultivate engineering staff and laboratory technicians as leading edge resources to support the development of the testing team as a motivated and strategically focused entity, by means of fostering a cooperative and proactive environment based on honesty, respect, and integrity. This also includes ensuring that all respective staff members comply with all company policies and procedures as defined by the Mercedes-Benz Research Development North America employee handbook.
    • Ensure optimal utilization of the Ann Arbor laboratory by coordinating efforts to ensure proper maintenance of building and support equipment, timely ordering of supplies, scheduling of tests, and staffing of personnel.
    • Lead liaison among Mercedes-Benz Research Development North America and Daimler AG, as needed, to provide accurate emissions and fuel economy test data as set forth by state and federal regulations, and to meet the specific needs of Mercedes-Benz Research Development North America departments.
    • Facilitate discussions with supervisors, peers, and staff to share and obtain technical and regulatory testing knowledge and expertise.
    • Build in process reliability, to ensure compliance of Mercedes-Benz Research Development North America testing processes, and ultimately Mercedes-Benz vehicles, by assigning and supervising the calibration and maintenance of exhaust and Sealed Housing Evaporative Procedure analytical equipment that impact process control & reliability and or the capability to generate data.
    • Contribute technical insight and expertise, as it relates to testing methodologies for fuel economy or emissions, to ensure that the Mercedes-Benz brand is properly represented during the regulatory rulemaking process.
    • Anticipate short and long term testing requirements and objectives to determine cost effective staffing levels and equipment needs based on regulatory and client requirements.
    • Manage projects and or programs for quoting, acquiring and or installing new or upgraded process and or facility equipment.
    • Ensure compliance of all OSHA, state, and local regulations pertaining to the laboratory’s facility and employees, including contract and temporary staff, by assessing and minimizing any risks which may endanger the personal safety of employees and or contractors.
    • Monitor operational trends and expenses to ensure cost effective operations.
    • Utilize best practice techniques to investigate and embrace new technologies, generate cost savings, and enhance standardized testing practices and processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • B.S. degree in engineering or equivalent experience, along with prior automotive testing experience is required.
    • Expert knowledge of emission testing procedures, technology, and Automotive Government Code of Federal Regulations.
    • An in-depth knowledge of Mercedes-Benz EVAP and Emission systems and their corresponding effect on test results.
    • Ability to understand and compensate for the diverse work and ethnic cultures of respective personnel.
    • Understanding of process flow and improvement knowledge to ensure cost effective operation of the laboratory facility.
    • An understanding of controlling practices, conduct trend analysis and implement process improvements, improve efficiencies and generate cost savings.
    • Implement best practice testing methodology to research, resolve, and maximize test and calibration process opportunities.
    • Knowledge of local and state safety regulations such as and not limited to: OSHA, ISO 9001:2015, etc.  
    • Proficient and effective communication both written and oral.
    • Ability to maintain a focused and motivated team through coaching, teambuilding, interpersonal skills and personnel development.
    • Experienced in Microsoft Office.
    • F2 License.
    • Valid US Driver's License.

    • Vehicle Diagnostic Experience.
    • Emissions Testing Experience.
