Our Mercedes-Benz Research and Development, Inc. Long Beach office is looking for a Senior Test Engineer responsible for Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems testing.  As a testing team passionate about developing safe, high performing, intuitive advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems, we are looking for a new teammate that aligns with those goals.  This role supports the development of the future generations of Mercedes-Benz products and technologies, including our next generation of EV models. This position focuses on sensor testing, including the stereo multipurpose camera (SMPC), LiDAR, and other ADAS-related testing technologies and projects.  This role is responsible to evaluate and drive continuous improvement of the overall AD/ADAS
sensor performance in the unique road conditions, infrastructure, and driver behaviors of the US and Canadian markets.  The role has end-to-end testing process responsibilities including executing test drive events, updating sensor hardware and software, in-depth analysis of measurement data, defect reporting, and delivering high quality engineering test reports and release recommendations.  Applicants should expect to perform regular on-road test drives, both locally in Southern California and across the United States and Canada, as required.   

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Lead the sensor testing for the Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems testing team.
    • Systematically test and evaluate the performance of AD/ADAS system components and sensors, with a focus on US-market specific conditions. 
    • Collect measurement data to identify, analyze, and document potential issues found during testing.
    • Document faults directly into the STARC defect management system.
    • Track open faults and provide support to RD colleagues with analysis of faults and solutions ideas. 
    • Summarize faults and findings into a release report, and submit to responsible departments in a systematic and timely manner. 
    • Maintaining and updating test vehicles to the latest SW/HW levels.  
    • Maintain vehicle scheduling, track hardware and software availability in order to complete tasks on time and minimize vehicle down time.
    • Update and maintain SW and HW on dedicated test vehicles to both released and pre-released levels.
    • The ability to flash ECUs, calibrate sensors, and perform ECU readouts is required. 
    • Maintain Advanced Driver Assistance Systems test vehicles and data logging equipment, calibrate sensors, write work orders for workshop to perform sensor replacement, and vehicle updates.
    • Utilize experience in advanced troubleshooting of complex CAN/Flexray/Ethernet based network architectures Communication and Reporting.
    • Keep regular communication with internal and external departments in order to stay informed on potential shifting timelines and software package readiness.  Adapt testing plans accordingly. 
    • Ability to deliver high-quality engineering reports and Release Recommendations that are data driven and clearly communicate all faults.
    • Utilize experience and sensor and system knowledge to escalate faults and issues to management when required to assure successful performance in the North American markets.
    • Strive to stay informed of industry trends, new technologies, and competitor performance for AD/ADAS systems.
    • Continuously improve testing strategies and planning for ADAS testing projects, test routes, test methods, and reporting.  This includes reference routes and performance metrics documentation tracked on a recurring basis.
    • Lead project budget planning and updates with customer departments.
    • Support other engineering teams as needed within the AD/ADAS team and larger Electronic Systems Testing team.
    • Provide technical expertise to other engineering teams with system and sensor knowledge when requested. 
    • Research US specific traffic environment and condition related to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
    • Align and share project status and testing results with other international testing sites. 

Required Qualifications (Education & Experience):

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering, etc.
    • AD/ADAS Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of Automated Driving and Driver Assistance Systems. Knowledge of competitor systems and all AD/ADAS sensor technologies.
    • Automotive development knowledge: understanding of the automotive vehicle development process. Familiarity with vehicle networking architecture (CAN, Flexray, Ethernet, etc), common diagnostic tools and measurement systems such as CANoe, DTS Monaco, as well as ability to analyze and interpret diagnostic and
    • fault measurements to trouble shoot issues.  
    • Driving skills:  as this role requires the highest Mercedes-Benz driver certification, the applicant will be expected to pass a T2-level driver certification test.  This requires the ability to fully control a vehicle under high-mu driving conditions and prove this during a closed-course driving examination.
    • Project Management Skills: Ability to coordinate across multiple departments the vehicle updating, testing, and reporting in order to deliver on-time results in a dynamic environment. 
    • Organizational and Leadership Skills: Ability to organize people, budgets, logistics, and workshop tasks within the Tech Center, as well as with the customer departments, functional teams, and management in Germany. Ability to participate and lead groups on test-drives.
    • Interpersonal and Team skills: Experience in intercultural environment. German language skills can be helpful to read and understand project requirements and communicate with counterparts in Germany, but not required. Applicant must be able to independently build-up working relationships with intra-company expert departments in Germany. Ability to travel up to 30% including domestic and international business trips and test drives. This includes test trips that require frequent overnight and weekend travel.
    • Valid California Driver’s License
    • Ability to test drive vehicles 

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Testing experience in Automated Driving and/or Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS).
    • First-hand experience with vehicle troubleshooting, Daimler diagnostic tools, project management.
    • Master's degree with emphasis in Computer, Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering.
