In Farmington Hills, Michigan, the focus is on Powertrain and eDrive technology as well as in Long Beach, where the teams test durability of the latest driver assistant and telematic systems. The Digital Hub in Seattle focusses on developing a cloud architecture and building out the cloud platform for the next generation of connected car services. The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.

The selected candidate will work with inventors and the Patent team on a wide variety of technologies in the automotive sector, from electric vehicle technology to autonomous driving, software, and AI, and will contribute to expanding an intellectual property portfolio for that builds on Mercedes Benz’s industry-leading position in the automotive industry.  

Job Responsibilities:

    • Conduct invention disclosure meetings, to develop understanding of inventions in a variety of different technology areas relevant to modern vehicles
    • Strategize with the inventors, patent team members, and other colleagues to create a strategy for IP protection, including the crafting of patent claim strategy
    • Expand the Mercedes-Benz patent portfolio by drafting patent applications that further capture the inventions discussed during the disclosure meetings and based on the crafted strategy for IP protection.
    • Expand the size of granted patents for Mercedes-Benz by prosecuting patent applications at the USPTO, including collaborating with inventors and patent team members on strategy, preparing response to office actions, and conducting examiner interviews 

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Minimum years of experience recommended: 0-3 years    
    • BS degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, such as computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, math, or physics.
    • Ability to communicate with inventors to understand their inventions, and to translate their inventions to a patent claim strategy and patent description
    • USPTO Registration NOT required if candidate has patent drafting experience

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in different technology areas.
The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on a wide range of factors, including, but not limited to, job-related education, skills, and experience, geographic location, and market conditions. The current salary range for this position is as follows and may be modified in the future: $43/hr - $48/hr
