Embedded in a worldwide network Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America continuously strives to remain at the forefront of successful automotive research and development. MBRDNA is headquartered in Silicon Valley, California, with key areas of Autonomous Driving, Advanced Interaction Design, Digital User Experience, Machine Learning, Customer Research, and Open Innovation. In Redford, Michigan, the focus is on Powertrain and eDrive technology as well as in Long Beach, where the teams test durability of the latest driver assistant and telematic systems. The Digital Hub in Seattle focusses on developing a cloud architecture and building out the cloud platform for the next generation of connected car services. The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.

The purpose of this staff engineer position is to lead the development of the next level operating strategy functions for hybrid powertrain systems of Mercedes-Benz for a number of function clusters. Based on the current software, new concepts are designed and implemented as part of MB’s Central Powertrain Controller (CPC) in-house software. The function development includes: Conceptual design of SW features in close cooperation with powertrain project teams, specification of new features and changes, algorithm development, software development, prototype validation, simulation and release testing, calibration, issue tracking and resolution, software release planning. The development includes SiL, HiL, powertrain test bench and vehicle testing.

    • Function and feature ownership Be the owner of assigned software hybrid operating strategy function cluster. Examples for software functions included are: aggregate state control, internal drive programs (e.g. EV-Mode), engine load shift, predictive operating strategy (e.g. route determined operating strategy)
    • Function development Identify and propose new features, create feature requirements in close cooperation with hybrid project teams, incorporate research results, accommodate new architectures, improve functions to meet new legislative standards, develop prototype software using MB’s tool chain, validate and prove new features, plan release roll-out to all relevant vehicle platforms. Per project needs, document existing control functions.
    • Release testing and calibration Align testing tasks with software release planning. Identify testing needs, define testing goals, create test cases, collect and analyze testing data, document testing results. Provide release documentation to the management. Testing may include validation using SiL, HiL, powertrain test benches and test vehicles Provide base calibration for CPC control functions to meet requirements. Support hybrid team workshop and test trips. In case no written requirements are available, clarify with internal customers or use own engineering judgement. Identify, report and fix function deficiency, follow up until it is completely resolved. Submit calibration changes and document the changes following the release process.
    • Issue resolution Receive and own internal or customer reported issues. Decide and schedule testing environments (SiL HiL, dynamometer, vehicle) to reproduce the issue. Identify the root cause, propose algorithm and/or calibration fixes, validate and document the resolution. Request and plan SW releases for all affected vehicle platforms.
    • Agile development and interfacing Hybrid powertrains are developed as a complex system of software and hardware components. Understanding the system as a whole is crucial for successful product development.
