We are an international fully remote team, where everyone works autonomously with the expectation that you can be available for team syncs in the same core hours (9:00 am and 12:00 pm PST). The exact times and days vary per team. We offer highly competitive compensation (salary and equity) that is location and level-based.

As a key hire in Medal’s design organization, you will have the opportunity to build upon the success of our products, take them to new heights and build new ones. 

As Product Design Director, you will be a key contributor to the growth, innovation, and continued improvement of Medal. You have a proven track-record in leading a team of product designers. You have multi-faceted experiences in Product, UX research, UX/Experience Design, and Visual Interface Design across the web and native mobile platforms. Your time will be split between team management, strategy, and individual UX/Design contributions. This role will report directly to the VP of Product.

In the short term, you will:

    • Manage and mentor our team of Product Designers
    • Fully immerse yourself into Medal’s Recorder, Editor and Social features to roll out a new and improved product experience
    • Work side-by-side with Product and Engineering to design new products and iterate on existing products, delivering best-in-class experiences, user research, and prototyping for our desktop, web, and mobile apps
    • Communicate with Medal’s users to intimately understand and translate their wants and needs into meaningful products and experiences
    • Build and test prototypes early and often to validate and communicate ideas and gain new insights along the way, translating winning prototypes and validated ideas into successful designs
    • Understand product and business objectives and use data to iterate and inform the design and product decisions

In the long term, you will:

    • Identify, hire, onboard, and mentor an exceptional Product Design team that consistently delivers on projects and is well-balanced across a range of design skill sets
    • Develop and own the design strategy for our overall/whole platform experience
    • Contribute to and help shape the product roadmap, both short term, and long-term
    • Own, iterate on and enhance our design system - evangelizing it throughout the organization
    • Own the user journey across all of Medal’s touchpoints, including web, mobile, email, social, etc., and ensure they function well on their own, and as a whole
    • Be responsible to measure success KPI’s and report on team / track performance and business impact
    • Create designs that are beautiful, consistent, and pointed to as a great example of a best-in-class digital experience, across the social and gaming industry and beyond
    • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and the Executive Team to ensure alignment in strategy, collaboration in execution and overall effective use of design resources, including impact and ROI
    • Build an organization that systematically and consistently drives strategy and delivers great product and user experiences
    • Empower people to do their best work at Medal

What we're looking for:

    • 10+ years of Design and UX leadership experience within high traffic digital consumer products (100,000+ visitors per day), preferably in gaming, video, search/discovery or social 
    • A passion for and strong understanding of online communities and gaming culture
    • Prior experience with managing teams of at least 5 people
    • Subject matter expertise in Product Design with a proven track record of building successful innovative and scalable products - vision, strategy and roadmap, KPIs/objectives setting, ideation and implementation process, team alignment with business goals
    • Success at bringing a range of people into the research and design process, including cross-functional partners (product managers, designers, developers, marketers), and successfully engaging stakeholders and executives
    • Strong command of visual and communication design principles and product thinking
    • Skilled using Figma
    • Strong user empathy — you love engaging with users and communities and have experience conducting your own user research
    • Experience designing technical products such as search, recommendations, data knowledge
    • Experience working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You thrive when tackling ambiguous challenges and are tenacious when facing setbacks. You're able to ruthlessly prioritize and work efficiently under pressure and demanding timelines
    • You're excited to implement design best practices and processes at Medal and able to make decisions and progress with limited direction, resources or data
    • Strong collaboration skills and can collaborate both synchronously and asynchronously
    • Understanding the principles of CSS and how it impacts your designs. Being familiar with engineering processes and how your designs translate to code is a strong plus
