Company Description
Nithio is a venture-backed finance and data analytics platform that uses AI and machine learning techniques to improve credit scoring capabilities for businesses, capital providers, governments, and other stakeholders in the distributed renewable energy sector across Africa. The company is currently in rapid growth mode and aims to address the acute need for universal clean energy access on the continent by providing a sustainable infrastructure for capital delivery and by offering state-of-the-art credit underwriting software.
 
 
Summary of Position
The successful candidate will have a strong quantitative background, experience with Python, and above all an entrepreneurial, inventive, experiment-driven mindset. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in geospatial analysis, relevant sector expertise (energy, credit assessments, etc.), and/or experience on the African continent.

Responsibilities
This position will perform a range of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
      Support the data team in designing, training, testing, and implementing algorithmic models core to Nithio’s products and services.
      Contribute to project and product success: Collaborate across the team to provide successful data science solutions for Nithio’s clients, including understanding business requirements and executing on project deliverables.
      Make data science accessible: Document pipelines and processes clearly and support other team members in understanding and using data science workflows and outputs.
      Measure, learn, repeat: Track KPIs for models and products, and identify approaches to improve performance, mitigate risks, and align on business goals.
      Effectively communicate complexity: Synthesize, visualize, and communicate results to both internal and external stakeholders, through dashboards, plots, presentations and reports.
 
The Data Science Intern will report to the Data Scientist.
 
Commitment
      Part-time commitment: 20-30 hours per week (will set specific expectations with selected candidate in consideration of their schedule)
      Internship will be remote, although if the intern is located near our hubs in Washington DC, NYC, Oxford, Lagos, Nairobi or Amsterdam, there will be opportunities to collaborate in-person
      Manager will be in GMT time zone & the candidate will need to be able to be online & able to collaborate in this time zone
      Term: Summer, with potential to extend through Fall
 
 
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:
      Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Master’s program in a related field. Experience with Python (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, etc.) and SQL; additional experience with R is a plus.
      Experience or exposure to applied quantitative methods and/or programming;
      Training and experience with applied statistics and quantitative modeling (e.g., regression, survival analysis, segmentation, experimentation, and machine learning).
      Familiarity with version control and software engineering fundamentals.
      Outstanding communication and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex and technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
      Excitement about owning projects and thinking in creative ways
      Proactive as the team is geographically disbursed
      Highly entrepreneurial and self-motivated
      Demonstrated problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills with the ability to articulate and present points of view and ideas effectively
      Experience prioritizing multiple, competing priorities with strong attention to detail and to advance discrete projects both independently and as part of a small team
