We are looking for an experienced product manager to lead a new mobile app initiative with worldwide reach.

Tech Matters is seeking to add a senior product manager to help guide the Terraso platform and apps, an open source project delivering critical software tools to empower communities around the world to adopt sustainable practices addressing the climate change crisis. Terraso supports communities to organize, fund, and execute activities to sustain and regenerate human welfare and ecosystem health. Our goal is to develop indispensable open source infrastructure crucial to society's response to the climate crisis, focused on the people making change on the ground in local communities.

We are building and curating tools to help people with:

    • Data: collecting, sharing, analyzing, and visualizing data
    • Mapping: monitoring vegetation, water, and soil quality
    • Learning: building capacity and sharing sustainable practices with fellow practitioners
    • Storytelling: combining local stories with compelling data to effect change

This role is for you if you:

    • want to use your abilities and experience to help the world
    • are curious, thoughtful and critical
    • enjoy being part of building something new
    • excel at collaborating with people with a wide range of talents
    • have informed opinions on your craft and a willingness to both take feedback and advocate for the integrity of your work
    • are comfortable taking on ownership and responsibility
    • believe in the nonprofit social impact mission of Tech Matters

In this role, you will:

    • be a leader, a visionary, and a practical doer, simultaneously
    • act as a champion for our users, understanding and balancing their varied needs, and evaluating our success in meeting those needs
    • inspire, as our chief storyteller for your products
    • evolve and maintain the specification and prototyping process through deep and sustained collaboration with designers, software developers, senior management, our partners, and our funders
    • define product requirements, user stories, functional specifications, and business logic as needed in an agile, rapid prototyping environment
    • drive a culture of measurement and continuous improvement, actively reporting on milestones and deliverables
    • inspire the best in those you work with
    • prioritize inclusion of diverse perspectives, making sure they are built into our processes, feature decisions, and implementation

You could be a great candidate for this role if you have:

    • five or more years of experience as a product manager for consumer software skills in gathering and interpreting user perspective so that requirements and design reflect real needs, not preconceived technology decisions
    • experience with Agile development
    • experience with a rapid prototyping toolkit, whatever form that may take
    • balanced working independently with being team-oriented; know when and how to be a diplomat or a lone wolf
    • the ability to move quickly, even in the absence of full information
    • attention to detail and a willingness to take time to think things through and do them the right way
    • enough technical ability to troubleshoot and triage customer issues and have conversations with software developers to understand implementation tradeoffs
    • experience navigating deep partnerships with other organizations
    • a commitment to building an inclusive and thoughtful workplace
    • ability to write with great simplicity and clarity, both for technical and non-technical audiences

We’d be particularly delighted to hire someone who:

    • is a learner at heart; always willing to be wrong and learn something new
    • is interested in or experienced with conservation and sustainability
    • has experience with one or more key technology issues relevant to this project, such as geospatial data, modeling (economic, financial, climate), mobile apps, or data organization & analysis
    • has developed or maintained open source software
    • speaks, reads, and writes two or more human languages

We don’t require:

    • any particular credentials, whether educational or title-related
    • prior nonprofit experience
    • prior remote work experience

Our Tools

    • we use Slack, Zoom, and Google Workspace tools for collaborative engagement
    • we use Figma, Miro, and Mural to communicate visually
    • we use Trello and GitHub to track tasks and bugs
    • we use Airtable to hold user research data

Our Team

    • The overall Terraso team is eight people. We are still in startup mode and every individual makes a big impact. You would report to our Project Director.
    • We are a remote-first, distributed team across the Americas. You can work from anywhere in these time zones. We have core overlap hours of 11am-5pm US Eastern Time, which is flexible day-to-day with partner meetings starting as early as 9am.
    • We do a lot of coordination asynchronously, so writing is important. While we seek to keep meetings to a minimum, we have meetings to develop a sense of community even while far apart physically.
The salary range for this position is $100,000–130,000 dependent on experience and location.

For our U.S. employees we provide medical, dental, vision and life insurance, a 401(k) with match, 20 days of vacation, 10 holidays and an education subsidy. Outside of the U.S., we will adjust for local circumstances (generally by building 30 days of paid time off into your daily rate).

You should apply
Our users come from all kinds of communities, and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our organization stronger in delivering social impact. We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.

We know there are great candidates who might not check all of these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

An important part of every application is a cover letter describing why this position and our mission particularly resonated with you.
