About Vested

Compensation at startups is broken. Almost 80% of employee equity is abandoned, meaning startup employees (about 6 million in the U.S.) are missing out on hundreds of billions of dollars. That’s money they earned and that could be changing their lives — enabling them to pay off student loans, buy their first home, or start a family — but that’s not what’s happening. Vested exists to fix this.

Employees abandon their equity for two main reasons: knowledge and capital. First, they don’t really understand what it is and how it works. Second, most employees receive stock options, which need to be “exercised” to purchase real equity (shares). But exercising costs money and has tax consequences, both of which can add up to tens of thousands of dollars or more. Most people don’t have that kind of money sitting around to invest into a startup, so they choose not to exercise their options, which then expire. The unclaimed shares go back into the company, benefitting the company, its management, and its venture capitalists, while average employees lose out.

Meanwhile, investor interest in startups has never been higher. With companies staying private longer than ever, and the VC asset class consistently outperforming, investors of all types are looking for a way in.

Enter Vested. We provide employees with knowledge and capital. From the moment an employee is considering a job offer, we’re there for them with tools they can use to truly understand their equity offer and determine whether it’s fair. As time goes on, we also help at key milestones, like when it's time to exercise (and to understand the mechanics and tax consequences of doing so). Finally, if an employee needs funding to exercise, or if they want to sell shares, we connect them to investor capital — ensuring they can actually capture the value they've earned.

About the Role

This is a huge role. Many of our key goals will depend on you and your team, and you’ll be empowered and trusted accordingly.

The market we’re building has two sides: (1) the supply/sell side, comprising holders of equity in private, venture-backed companies (namely employees and ex-employees of those companies), and (2) the demand/buy side, comprising investors who are seeking exposure to the VC asset class.

You will own growing the supply side. You’ll build a team and an operation whose mission is to introduce Vested to every single startup equity-holder, so that our knowledge-based tools are their go-to resource for understanding all things equity, and so that we’re their first stop when they’re looking for any kind of liquidity, whether option exercise funding, outright sales, or anything else.

The story of your work will be told in funnels and numbers, with metrics focused on users and deals. You’ll open, test, and scale acquisition channels and initiatives, sometimes doing the work yourself (if only initially), oftentimes hiring someone who knows more than you.

You’ll have an important voice on product and branding, because you’ll have data and other evidence regarding what consumers want and what messaging resonates with them. And you’ll have an important voice on how we tell our story to investors and other stakeholders, because you’ll have the most insight into our growth trajectory.

You'll be a central part of Vested's success.


    • Doing. Launch and grow initiatives across paid, owned, and earned media, affiliate marketing, partnerships, and wherever else you may find opportunity.
    • Building. Create a well-oiled machine of people and systems to run said initiatives.
    • Reporting. Describe every aspect of your work clearly in numbers — in regular reports, live conversation, and otherwise at the drop of a dime.

About You

    • You have 4+ years of direct experience at a high-growth startup.
    • You think in, and love talking about, the numbers of business.
    • You have a healthy amount of crazy ideas, some of which work!
