As Credit Risk Manager at Zeller, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the build of our Credit Risk strategy, function and underwriting capabilities. 

You will be an integral part of our day-to-day underwriting operations, including the decisioning of applications, providing feedback into the scoring and modelling process, and portfolio management. 

You will be highly collaborative and willing to challenge the status quo of underwriting processes and the customer experience; and have a strong track record of underwriting ‘good’ SMB credit and understand what ‘bad’ credit looks like. 

You’ll also be passionate about fixing the current flaws that exist in business lending and challenging assumptions in incumbent business models. 

On any given day, you'll be:

    • Implementing Zeller’s Credit Risk strategy through our policy and day-to-day decision making;
    • Providing feedback and input into modelling and policies;
    • Implementing and monitoring first line defence strategies to determine credit and fraud risk;
    • Undertaking credit risk decisions and taking action where necessary during the lifecycle of each loan;
    • Actively driving ongoing process improvement including improving credit quality and increasing automated decision making - to ensure that we are ready and able to scale rapidly;
    • Operating effective credit risk management processes and controls across the business to maintain credit decision quality;
    • Providing sound, high quality recommendation to management on complex applications;
    • Work to metrics and understand the levers available to improve credit quality and / or volume in the underwriting process 
    • Work with Zeller’s data scientists to provide application and underwriting feedback into the modelling and scoring process; develop novel quantitative and qualitative signals that aid decisioning; undertake cohort performance assessment, and propose champion/challenger assessment strategies.

A bit about you:

    • You love challenging the status-quo - particularly in the decisioning and underwriting disciplines;
    • You’ve an open-mindedness to novel models of credit scoring -- less reliant on historic financial statements, but rather credit scoring on the back of real time performance metrics and use of tools such as machine learning;
    • You’re able to continually balance speed, perfection, functionality, cost and design;
    • Willingness to oscillate between and balance ‘leadership’ with ‘getting your hands dirty’.

Your Experience, Expertise and Skills:

    • A background in SME lending, challenger banks, and other disruptive fintechs will be a natural advantage in this role. A person who has practical experience in developing risk scorecards and automating underwriting processes will also have a head-start;
    • Experience in bank or non-bank financial institution lenders is a must;
    • Demonstrable experience in a risk management role in financial services;
    • Prior small business lending experience is a significant advantage;
    • Understanding of credit scoring / credit bureau processes is a must;
    • Underwriting experience or a strong understanding of the underwriting process.
