AVIONICS ENGINEER – FLIGHT SAFETY SYSTEM

In this Avionics Engineering role, you will own the full cycle development of the Flight Safety System, the most critical system that unlocks RS1’s go-for-launch. You will be responsible for developing requirements, conceptual and detailed design, build/buy, test (Qual/Acceptance), and vehicle integration. You will also work closely with internal and external regulatory teams to ensure the success of the system.

Responsibilities

    • Own the success of the Flight Termination System
    • Develop and define requirements compatible with guiding regulatory documents (RCC-319, RCC-324)
    • Architect and design avionics systems that fulfill regulatory, technical, and operational requirements
    • Identify COTS components, custom solutions, and vendors in support of the Fight Safety System
    • Plan and lead comprehensive qualification and acceptance testing campaigns to ensure hardware reliability under all operating conditions
    • Conduct a breadth of analyses including system reliability, bent pin, sneak circuit, RF link budgets, power budgets, failure analysis, and other assessments to guarantee system fidelity
    • Partner with internal and external regulatory bodies to gain Flight Termination System approval
    • Track progress and provide status to technical and executive leaders, as needed

Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in an engineering, science, or math field
    • 2+ years of full cycle avionics product development experience in a professional environment

Preferred Skills and Experience

    • 5+ years of full cycle avionics product development experience in the aerospace or aviation industry
    • Flight Safety or Flight Termination System experience
    • Proficiency with a wide variety of components (solenoid valves, industrial instrumentation, network devices, RF systems, RTDs, hall-effect sensors, GPS receivers, etc)
    • Experience with system-level analyses (such as power, link, and data budgets)
    • Working knowledge of CAD software (NX, SolidWorks) and PCB design software (Altium)
    • Experience leading qualification and acceptance testing campaigns
    • Experience with regulatory compliance and coordination with the RCC, USAF, FAA, or similar regulatory agencies
    • Master’s degree in electrical and/or mechanical engineering

Physical Requirements/Work Environments

    • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and video conferencing
    • The employee will typically work in an office environment, but the job might require traveling to vendors, test sites, and the launch site
