Mission Manager

Seattle, Washington /
Corporate – Mission Management /
Full-time
ABL Space Systems was founded in 2017 by veterans of SpaceX and Morgan Stanley to develop low-cost launch vehicles for the small satellite industry. More importantly, we’re building a launch system we are truly proud of – no gimmicks or over-design, just reliable, rapidly deployable launches. We’re an ambitious team with big goals and, together, we’re determined to prove that reaching space can be simple, efficient, and routine.

When launch day arrives, we want you by our side

MISSION MANAGER
As a Mission Manager, you will work directly with ABL’s customers and engineering team to successfully deliver payloads to orbit. You will have the opportunity to work across multiple missions on the ABL manifest, including delivery of commercial and government cubesats, smallsats, and other small payloads. Mission managers additionally provide technical support on business proposals, track and deliver on contractual mission requirements, create interface control documentation, plan and oversee payload integration activities, and host customer meetings/reviews. We are looking for team members who enjoy a variety of challenges, can communicate effectively, thrive in a fast-paced environment and share our passion for creating a seamless and premier end-to-end customer integration and launch experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Support business development in technical customer interchanges and proposal writing
    • Manage contractual deliverables from contract signing through to successful payload delivery on orbit
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for ABL customers, including reporting, leading reviews, scope negotiation, and operations planning
    • Proactively strive to create a smooth and streamlined mission integration process for both internal and external stakeholders
    • Work across engineering teams on mission design, schedule, and requirements, ensuring proper flow down of requirements between the customer and the internal team
    • Create Interface Control Documentation (ICD) and generate requirements for payload-to-launch vehicle interfaces
    • Lead, perform, and drive requirements verification and validation activities
    • Oversee hands-on payload integration activities
    • Develop operations plans and products for successful payload integration and mission operations
    • Provide mentorship to Mission Integration Engineers

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field
    • 2+ years prior experience in Mission Management, Mission Integration, or Technical Program/Project Management

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Active TS/SCI or DoD Secret clearance, or willingness to pursue a clearance
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail
    • Ability to work extended hours to meet milestones and deadlines
    • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time for launch operations and customer-related activities (such as fit checks or industry conferences)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Prior project management experience, including work with MS Project or other schedule management tools
    • Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (such as Solidworks)
    • Prior experience in sales, business development, or other direct experience with external customers
    • Experience using requirements management software such as JAMA, DOORS, Jira, or similar tools
    • Prior experience working with the US Government
    • Prior hands-on experience on a technical project

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

    • Critical thinking:  ABL engineers understand the “why” behind all design decisions, operational events and test outcomes
    • Ability to deal with ambiguity: ABL engineers must be comfortable defining their own pathway to an objective
    • End-to end ownership:  projects are delivered fully complete and ready for flight

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS:
