Lead Build Reliability Engineer

El Segundo, California /
Manufacturing – Manufacturing /
/ On-site
ABL Space Systems was founded in 2017 by veterans of SpaceX and Morgan Stanley to develop low-cost launch vehicles for the small satellite industry. More importantly, we’re building a launch system we are truly proud of – no gimmicks or over-design, just reliable, rapidly deployable launches. We’re an ambitious team with big goals and, together, we’re determined to prove that reaching space can be simple, efficient, and routine.

When launch day arrives, we want you by our side

As a Lead Build Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and managing programs and processes to enable building high quality launch vehicles. You will drive initiatives with technical leadership and work across functions to standardize operations to facilitate the rapid building of hardware. You understand how to architect systems that improve reliability without the process being overburdensome. This position includes, but is not limited to, managing the AS9100 certification process, nonconformance and corrective actions, and engineering change orders. We are looking for a Lead Build Reliability Engineer who is action oriented and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

    • Define, develop, and lead the implementation of numerous processes and systems, such as FOD and environmental controls, equipment calibration, receiving inspections, and electrostatic discharge control
    • Take ownership of the nonconformance and engineering change order systems
    • Collaborate with technical and corporate leadership to drive operational process improvements
    • Work with manufacturing engineers and technicians to develop and implement manufacturing and integration best practices
    • Manage the AS9100 certification process and implement systems and processes

    • 5+ years of experience with quality, manufacturing, or design engineering
    • Strong understanding of configuration control, traceability, and verification methods
    • Proficiency in enterprise systems including MRP/ERP, Teamcenter, and Jira
    • Experience supporting AS9100 certification
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail
    • Excellent project management and program management skills
    • Bachelors degree in electrical, manufacturing, mechanical, material sciences, or similar engineering degree from an accredited university

    • Led the development of new or improvement of established quality systems
    • Led AS9100 or similar industry quality certification process
    • Experience with quality tools such as Lean principles, Six Sigma, Root Cause Analysis, and Corrective Actions
    • Experience in developing or executing processes for several of the following: CNC machining, additive manufacturing, bending, tube forming and fabrication, detailed or complex assemblies, welding (TIG, OTW), PCB integration and testing, harnessing

    • Critical thinking: ABL engineers understand the "why" behind all design decisions, operational events and test outcomes.
    • Ability to deal with ambiguity: there is no roadmap and ABL engineers must be comfortable defining their own pathway to an objective.
    • End-to-end ownership: projects are delivered fully complete and ready for flight; there is no one to pick up the slack of partially complete work.
