Ground Segment Engineer

Los Angeles, California /
Engineering – Electronic Systems /
Full-time
ABL Space Systems was founded in 2017 by veterans of SpaceX and Morgan Stanley to develop low-cost launch vehicles for the small satellite industry. More importantly, we’re building a launch system we are truly proud of – no gimmicks or over-design, just reliable, rapidly deployable launches. We’re an ambitious team with big goals and, together, we’re determined to prove that reaching space can be simple, efficient, and routine.

When launch day arrives, we want you by our side

The ABL Ground Segment team is responsible for our global network of RF and video communication systems. This network includes ground stations, launch site RF communications and optical tracking, recovery RF, and operational voice and mission control video. The team is responsible for defining interfaces with the NASA flight operations team and developing integrations for ABL systems with various ground systems and communication networks. The team helps with all design and build of these critical systems in addition to communications readiness testing and real-time operations for RS-1 operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design and build ground station communication systems through all stages of development (site survey, system design review, hardware selection, hardware integration, end-to-end testing and activation)
    • Present engineering design reviews, as well as participate in proposal-writing efforts
    • Work with engineers and technicians to deploy and maintain complete ground station systems to be mission ready
    • Interface with multiple disciplines including customers, mission management, avionics, RF, logistics, suppliers, and manufacturing
    • Troubleshoot issues on ground stations and production assemblies on an aggressive schedule
    • Lead the selection, integration, and maintenance of ground support rack hardware and software
    • Specify and drive creation of ground stations hardware-in-the-loop test systems to support software development and system verification and validation
