Test Technician (Sub-Assemblies)

El Segundo, California

Full-time /
On-site
ABL Space Systems was founded in 2017 by veterans of SpaceX and Morgan Stanley to develop low-cost launch vehicles for the small satellite industry. More importantly, we’re building a launch system we are truly proud of – no gimmicks or over-design, just reliable, rapidly deployable launches. We’re an ambitious team with big goals and, together, we’re determined to prove that reaching space can be simple, efficient, and routine.

When launch day arrives, we want you by our side

We are looking for an experienced Test Technician to help test development and production parts for our launch vehicle specifically in our Sub-Assembly area. ABL's Test Technicians maintain critical hardware on the test site and test articles, ensuring they are mechanically sound and prepared for the next test. We seek team members who have an ability to think critically when testing to improve hardware designs and manufacturing processes. This role will require specific skill sets with setting up, executing, and tearing down test operations.

We test parts from both billet material and additively manufactured parts:

·        Aluminum
·        Steel
·        Stainless Steel
·        Inconel

Types of Equipment:

·        Hi Pressure Test Box
·        Pressure Cart
·        Water Flow Test Stand

Test Technicians execute the manual operations and maintenance that keeps the test site and test articles running smooth. Their diligence prevents fittings and fasteners from coming lose, joints from leaking, and damaging debris from entering critical systems.

Responsibilities

    • Build and maintain test facilities including propellant, high pressure, and cryogenic systems
    • Work alongside engineers to execute procedures for hazardous test operations
    • Troubleshoot and perform maintenance on fluid system, mechanical, and electrical systems
    • Work with engineers to build and maintain rocket engines and other test articles
    • Perform in-process and first article inspections
    • Own machine care and preventative maintenance
    • Support as needed with post-testing operations including but not limited to deburr, cleaning, and part marking
    • Support with material loading and handling
    • Work in concert with operations leadership and engineering to develop testing process order of operations
    • Support with issue ticket rework operations in accordance with issue ticket protocols

Basic Requirements

    • 4+ years of industry experience working with aircraft, cryogenic fluids, high pressure systems, or combustion device testing
    • High School diploma or GED
    • Experience with inspection tools and inspection processes
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
    • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
    • Physically able to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 50lbs (unassisted)

Preferred Skills and Experience

    • Ability to deal with ambiguity: working with leadership and team on roadmap and must be comfortable defining their own pathway to an objective
    • End-to-end ownership: projects are delivered fully complete and ready for flight; there is no one to pick up the slack of partially complete work
    • Hands on experience with metal 3D printed components
    • Experience in aerospace, medical, or automotive manufacturing
    • Strong oral and written communication
    • Experience with Microsoft Office products
    • Familiarity with ISO9001 and AS9100
