American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is one of the greatest dance companies in the world. ABT’s repertoire includes full-length classics from the nineteenth century, the finest works from the early twentieth century, and acclaimed contemporary masterpieces.  In 2006, by an act of Congress, ABT was designated “America’s National Ballet Company®.”

The Accounting & Finance team is seeking a Controller with non-profit experience who will have oversight over day-to-day accounting operations, the monthly close process, financial statement preparation, analyses, and annual audit. The position will report to the Chief Financial Officer.

Specific Responsibilities

    • Key contributor for preparation of annual $45-50 million budget
    • Ensure month-end close on all balance sheet and P&L accounts
    • Develop and monitor current and future cash flow projections
    • Act as main audit contact
    • Prepare schedules and financial statements for auditors
    • Complete Forms 990, 5500, and multiple state tax return filings
    • Organize and help present financial reports to Audit, Finance, and Investment Committees
    • Produce financial reports by funds, projects, and departments
    • Generate and distribute quarterly budget-to-actuals by department
    • Record and monitor endowment investment activity
    • Communicate with the CFO daily on financial and administrative topics
    • Deeply involved in company managerial subject matters including company liability insurance, employee health and dental insurance, disability insurance, labor union documents, mortgage, and line of credit
    • Manage compliance with bank covenants on quarterly basis
    • Allocate functional expenses by program and fund
    • Assist with grant proposals for government agencies, foundations, and corporations
    • Review donor-restricted gifts to verify program spending is in compliance with GAAP.
    • Coordinate and compile files and reports in advance of two annual state workers’ comp audits and two separate annual 403b pension audits
    • Ensure adherence to fiscal policies and procedures
    • Administrator for corporate credit cards for 15+ accounts
    • Oversee payroll (ADP) and employee benefit activities and ensure proper recording to the general ledger
    • Manage finance staff and department workflow
    • Oversee the financial day-to-day activities
    • Conduct financial analysis
    • Serve as a mentor to finance interns 
    • Maintain chart of accounts and project codes

Essential Skills/Qualifications

    • 10+ years of non-profit related accounting experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting (Master's degree or equivalent preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • CPA certification highly desirable 
    • Demonstrated high-level proficiency in various financial software (spreadsheets) and accounting systems (experience with Financial Edge preferred).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
