What We’re About:
Aeromutable is a fast-growth, venture capital-backed startup that boosts the fuel efficiency and profitability of the trucking industry, while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. We are focused on the design and manufacture of aerodynamic enhancement systems that increase vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency. Aeromutable has developed a non-intrusive trailer add-on system that, through dynamic air injection, significantly improves aerodynamic performance of semis. We love what we do and are excited to grow our team as we work to make our technology an industry standard.
The Role:
Aeromutable is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in San Diego, CA, to join our team and contribute to the development of groundbreaking technologies for the trucking industry. You will report directly to our co-founder and COO, Sandy Manosalvas-Kjono. Sandy is a proven and experienced leader who gained experience prior to co-founding Aeromutable as an R&D project manager and her appreciation for aerodynamics flying helicopters for the US Navy. You will accelerate Aeromutable’s commercialization plans by working to bring our hardware technology to market. This will utilize your knowledge of and experience with bringing hardware products from concept to market as well as your ability to communicate between organizations at different technical levels. You will work in a lean environment, leveraging external design firms, and customer partnerships and manufacturers. This is a great opportunity for a dynamic and focused engineer with a background in mechanical design and an appreciation for fluid dynamics and multidisciplinary design. In this role, you will use your passion for engineering to plan, conduct, and manage engineering design, development, and manufacturing of novel technologies with a direct impact on the economy and the environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Own and manage hardware product development, concept through production
- Responsible for mechanical design which will include many small parts and their relationship with one another
- Contribute to a broad range of fundamental mechanical engineering designs including mechanical and structural design, and manufacturing techniques
- Leverage fluid dynamics knowledge and insights to contribute towards the design of structures and mechanisms
- Interact closely with engineers, scientists, suppliers, and QA to resolve quality, design, and production issues
- Work with national and global manufacturing suppliers and partners, and drive individual part design from concept to production
- Travel to meet with suppliers
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders effectively using both oral and written communication during internal/external design reviews
- Demonstrating your ability to confidently and readily answer questions and provide expertise on the subject
Required Education & Experience:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Working knowledge of fluid dynamics and the ability to perform analytical analysis and conceptual trade off studies
- Ability to perform analytical analysis of structural components and perform force/moment estimations
- Ability to search out and select materials, components, and sub-systems for product development
- Exposure to traditional manufacturing processes (such as milling, turning, sheet metal, casting, etc) and rapid prototyping techniques (additive manufacturing, laser cutting, etc)
- Familiarity with machine shop tools and some ability to fabricate or modify simple parts
- Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to perform simple tolerance stack up analysis to apply in the creation of fabrication drawings for mechanical parts and assemblies
- Experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) in the creation of complex models both using solid modeling and surface modeling techniques
- Ability to create full documentation of design including Bill of Materials (BOM), fabrications drawings, assembly drawings, test and assembly procedures, etc
- Ability to build and troubleshoot prototypes, analyze results of reliability testing, iteratively improve the design, and bring to production
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally, communicate effectively, problem solve, think analytically, and make data-driven decisions
- Ability to communicate effectively using both oral and written communication to present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients, and other employees at all levels of the organization
