Who We Are
Afero provides a complete, end-to-end platform for the rapid development and deployment of secure, performant, cost-effective, and easy to-use consumer IoT devices—from major appliances to high-volume commodity hardware to hobby projects and prototypes. The beating heart of it all is the Afero Cloud, and we’re looking for a stellar Platform Infrastructure Engineer to apply their passion for automation, measurement, and traceability as a key member of our Cloud Engineering team. The ideal candidate will play a central role in our relentless pursuit of force multiplication, and will help shape the software, processes, and procedures for the entire cloud lifecycle—from deployment to scaling, to monitoring to postmortem—continuously improving reliability and reducing toil.

Who We’re Looking For
The range of disciplines and experiences represented at Afero is broad and deep, and everyone on the team contributes a distinct perspective. This is the culture we strive to sustain as we grow, and we expect successful Infrastructure Engineering candidates to bring unique combinations of skills and experience.

The Must-Haves:

    • 7+ years experience in applied infrastructure engineering in production environments, with comprehensive understanding of systems architecture, security, and operation, and a thorough steeping in DevOps culture.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills; a collaborative, team-oriented ethic; insatiable curiosity; and a compulsion for execution. You see yourself as a force multiplier, and you strive to help everyone around you be the best they can be.
    • Current/recent experience designing, operating, and troubleshooting Kubernetes-orchestrated clusters by applying infrastructure-, pipeline-, and observability-as-code principles.
    • A strong grasp of VPC Network Design, routing, and regional deployment.
    • A passion for Automating All Of The (right) Things, and the discernment to know when and how to apply it. A penchant for quantitative analysis.
    • Shell, Python, Terraform, and K8s manifest, and Helm fluency.
    • In-depth experience with various observability toolchains. Grafana/Prometheus family preferred, breadth of experience with multiple tools required.
    • Extensive experience with source control systems and artifact registries, their role in configuration management, and strategies for leveraging them as part of the CI/CD process.
    • Have the right to work legally in the USA.

Stand-out Experience:

    • Java and/or Golang experience.
    • Mastery of Kubernetes networking specifics in GCP/GKE and load balancing using HAProxy.
    • Demonstrated security/SecOps leadership, with experience integrating security and compliance tools at every stage of the software development lifecycle. Experience designing and scaling PKI management infrastructure a big plus.
    • Observability chops, including extensive work with Prometheus, Zipkin, Jaeger, Grafana, and friends.
    • Experience managing and tuning Neo4J, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and or SQLServer databases, as well as Redis cache clusters and message streaming infrastructure like Kafka and RabbitMQ.

Our Stack

    • We deploy our code as Docker containers in Kubernetes-orchestrated clusters, and rely heavily on Python and tools like Git, Terraform, Helm, Jenkins, and ArgoCD.
    • We write our application code in Java and Typescript, and we use MySQL, PostgreSQL, Neo4J, and BigQuery databases. We monitor our services using New Relic, StackDriver, Prometheus, Grafana, Zipkin, and other tools.
