Our client is a multi-disciplinary firm that partners with leading industrial clients across North America to deliver large-scale capital projects. With deep expertise in sectors like mining, metals, energy, and pulp & paper, our client is known for its strong technical coordination and rigorous project governance. We are open to finding talent across Canada as this is a 3 weeks a month on site and 1 week offsite position.

We are seeking an Construction Manager on FIFO (fly-in-fly out) basis in Baie-Comeau working on a large capital project for their client who is a global leader in bauxite, alumina, and aluminum production.

Position Purpose

The Construction Manager has overall accountability for the HSE, Cost, Schedule and Quality of the Construction execution packages, including inspections, conformance and compliance testing, handover to operations for assets installed by the Capital Projects program. Develop construction documentation to manage and coordinate the construction effort for all works within the Project. Manages assigned projects and the implementation of contractors and vendors involved to ensure that the projects are completed safely, meet quality requirements, on schedule, within budget and delivered to project requirements.

Must be bilingual in English and French.

Qualifications:

    • Degree in a Field of Engineering or Technical Diploma in Construction Management with Qualified Professional Trade Background

Experience:

    • Greater than 15 years in the Construction field.
    • Greater than 5 years in a Construction Manager or Superintendent Role.
    • Experience Managing EPC, EPMC, D&C, TK contracts (Client side preferred) 
    • Experience within the Mining Sector or Heavy Industry (preferred)

FEL3 Phase Construction Management:

    • Throughout the FEL3 phase, which includes the development of detailed project design and selection of construction contractors, the construction manager will assist our client in overall project coordination.
    •  Coordinate with the Engineering Services Provider(s) to facilitate value engineering and constructability reviews throughout detailed design activities. 
    • Develop General Conditions specifications and assist with the development of RFPs for the construction contractors, as needed.
    •  Provide engineering consultation, at our client’s discretion, for general review of construction drawings, specifications, and overall project approach. 
    • Assist in the development of an overall project schedule and track progress to enforce compliance with project deadline.
    • Assist in the development of an overall project budget, including both construction costs and soft costs, to be used for evaluation of construction bids.

Execution Phase Construction Management

    • Throughout the execution phase, which includes material procurement, construction, start-up/commissioning, and project closeout, the construction manager will shift to the field to assist our client with overall project execution, to include the following tasks
    •  Provide construction management and overall site management; plan, monitor, and coordinate all site activities by construction contractors, to include: Preparation of daily logs of contractor labor, major construction activities, and major product/material and equipment deliveries.
    •  Administration of field testing and any other independent Quality Control activities, as specified by the ESP. 
    • Track and facilitate responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) and Submittals. 
    • Assist with the review of contractor payment applications.

Execution Phase Construction Management

    • Coordinate waste disposal and staging of construction trailers, stored materials, etc. 
    • Coordinate with Site Safety Representative and Production Liaison (provided by our client). 
    • Collect back-up from contractors for any work outside of the project scope and track anticipated costs. 
    • Collect red-line drawings from all contractors and subcontractors at the completion of work. 
    • Maintain overall project schedule and identify any potential variances as soon as possible; work with our client to develop plans for preventative/corrective actions to minimize impact of such variances on schedule and budget. 
    • Provide construction cost control support, to include: Preparation of a construction budget and continual tracking of committed costs, estimated costs, and change orders.
    • Immediately advise our client Cost Control team of any anticipated change requests (to be authorized by our client). 
    • Provide budget updates to our client cost controller upon request, using our client accounting procedures. 
    • Administer regular progress meetings throughout the course of construction; prepare and publish agendas and meeting minutes. 
    • Prepare weekly progress reports to advise the our client team of construction status, including major activities, cost reporting, potential risks/problem areas, status of submittals, RFIs, and change orders, and any safety updates and quality control issues. 
    • Coordinate commissioning, turnover, and closeout activities, to include: Facilitating walk-through inspections by the ESP to identify any non-conformances within the work. 
    • Facilitating all required commissioning and training activities, as identified by the ESP and the manufacturers’ recommendations. 
    • Ensuring turnover of all spare parts, attic stock, Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manuals, etc. from the contractors to our client. 
    • Coordinating the submission of all documentation required for contract closeout, including Consent of Surety, Performance Bonds, Waiver of Leans, and final payment applications.
    • Provide additional support as needed, both on-site and off-site, to ensure full-time oversight of construction activities and to effectively perform the administrative tasks described herein.
