Position Overview
The Dental Assistant will provide chairside and clinical support to dentists during oral examinations, restorative treatments, preventive services, and other dental procedures at designated Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities. This role requires a high degree of professionalism, technical skill, and cultural sensitivity, as the patient population may include individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Native American communities and non-English speakers.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
-Assist dentists during oral examinations, restorative procedures, preventive treatments, and emergency dental care.
-Pass instruments and materials to dentists; operate oral evacuators and suction devices to maintain a clear field of operation.
-Retract tissues, cheeks, and tongue to aid in visibility and access.
-Prepare treatment areas by laying out instruments, materials, and sterile trays.
-Prepare sutures, packs, and other procedural materials.
-Receive and prepare patients for treatment, explaining procedures and ensuring patient comfort.
Radiology & Diagnostics
-Operate dental x-ray equipment to obtain intra-oral images, including periapical and bitewing exposures, following radiation safety guidelines.
-Ensure proper storage and labeling of radiographs and digital images.
Infection Control & Safety
-Comply with IHS facility infection control protocols, OSHA standards, and Joint Commission/CMS guidelines.
-Sterilize instruments and maintain dental operatory cleanliness.
-Monitor and maintain adequate supply levels; store supplies properly in assigned areas.
Recordkeeping & Documentation
-Assist in updating patient records in Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, or in written form when required.
-Document treatment notes and ensure timely completion of records in compliance with IHS and Joint Commission standards.
Professional Conduct
-Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, IHS policies, and federal laws.
-Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity when interacting with patients and staff.
-Participate in required trainings, including orientation, infection control, and continuing education.
Minimum Qualifications
-Minimum of two (2) years current experience as a Dental Assistant.
-Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association (AHA)-approved course.
-Ability to work effectively with patients from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, including working with interpreters.
-Radiology Certification preferred but not required.
-Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word; familiarity with Dentrix or other EDR systems preferred.
-Must pass federal background checks and fingerprinting as required by the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (P.L. 101-630) and the Crime Control Act (P.L. 101-647).
