Overview:
Akicita Federal is seeking a highly qualified Fire Protection Engineer to serve as a technical consultant and subject matter expert in structural fire protection for the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). The Fire Protection Engineer will conduct fire safety evaluations, inspections, technical reviews of construction documents, and provide expert guidance to ensure facilities comply with applicable fire codes, standards, and regulations. The position supports the implementation of a comprehensive fire protection program across BIE facilities to protect life and property.

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Serve as a technical consultant and authoritative expert on a broad range of structural fire protection systems across Indian Affairs facilities.
-Support the development of technical and programmatic guidelines and methodologies for implementing structural fire protection programs and activities.
-Provide authoritative advice on fire protection methods, techniques, and procedures to improve facility safety and regulatory compliance.
-Identify, review, and recommend solutions for complex or controversial fire protection system design challenges.
-Conduct technical reviews of construction documents including:
-Design development documents
-Preliminary, completed, and final construction documents
-Specifications and shop submittals
-Ensure compliance of new and existing facility designs with Indian Affairs adopted codes, National Fire Codes, OSHA regulations, and other mandated standards.
-Conduct fire safety evaluations, inspections, and surveys, including inspection of:
-Exhaust systems in kitchens
-Fire sprinkler systems
-Fire alarm systems
-Fire extinguishers (including reserves)
-Furnish technical guidance regarding construction materials, workmanship, and methods to ensure fire safety compliance during project design and execution.
-Conduct final inspections of construction projects related to new builds, renovations, and life safety system installations, recommending contract modifications as needed to meet safety standards.
-Investigate serious fire or life-safety-related incidents and prepare formal accident analysis reports identifying root causes and corrective recommendations.
-Recommend methods for correcting unsafe or unsatisfactory conditions in facilities or operations.
-Evaluate proposed projects, operations, and equipment to recommend safety features or controls based on professional fire protection practices.
-Provide technical support for safety training initiatives, including instruction on applicable safety codes, standards, and protective equipment requirements.
-Train school personnel in the development of Deferred Maintenance Work Orders (DMWOs) in Maximo, ensuring adherence to established quality standards.

Required Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
-Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Fire Protection (required).
-Comprehensive knowledge of structural fire protection principles, design, construction methods, and federal regulatory requirements.
-Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in fire protection engineering.
-Expertise in site planning, building design, construction materials and methods, cost estimating, and scheduling practices.
-Proficiency with applicable codes and standards, including:
-National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes
-OSHA Regulations
-Indian Affairs codes and standards
-Skilled in the use of computer systems and software for project tracking, inspection reporting, and documentation.

Desired Skills:
-Strong analytical skills to conduct technical reviews, inspections, accident investigations, and safety evaluations.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills for preparing reports, accident analyses, and technical recommendations.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
-Familiarity with RS Means/CostWorks for cost estimating and Maximo CMMS for work order management.
-Ability to effectively train facility personnel and lead technical workshops.

Additional Information:
-Position requires nationwide travel to conduct onsite inspections, training sessions, and technical reviews.
-Work must be performed in strict compliance with applicable fire safety codes, construction standards, and federal regulations.
-Physical ability to perform facility inspections including climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and carrying equipment under 50 pounds.
