Senior Scientist - Spatial Transcriptomics

South San Francisco, CA
Target Discovery & Genomics /
Full-time /
On-site
Our mission is to develop therapies that empower the immune system to combat neurodegeneration and our team is focused on developing treatments for some of the most challenging diseases facing our society. We are supported in this mission by experienced and accomplished scientists and clinicians, a novel portfolio of programs, leading healthcare investors, and pharma company partners, who share in our commitment to bettering the lives of patients and realizing a world where we make brain disorders history

As a Senior Scientist specializing in Spatial Transcriptomics for the study of neurodegenerative diseases, you will lead and contribute to our research efforts aimed at unraveling the intricate molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these conditions. This position offers the unique opportunity to be at the forefront of research that has the potential to drive the development of novel therapeutic strategies for these devastating diseases.

Responsibilities include the development and execution of comprehensive research strategies to investigate the spatial gene expression patterns in neurodegenerative disease models, with a focus on understanding disease progression and potential therapeutic targets. You will oversee and actively engage in the generation of spatial transcriptomics data, from designing and optimizing experimental protocols to conducting experiments. You will collaborate closely with computational biologists, data scientists, and fellow researchers, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration to extract relevant insights from the data and drive innovative research for Alector’s therapeutic pipeline.

During your first year, your goals will include:

    • Successfully initiate at least one spatial transcriptomics research project focused on a specific neurodegenerative disease. This includes project planning, securing necessary resources, and defining clear research objectives.
    • Coordinate the generation of high-quality spatial transcriptomics data for the initiated project. Ensure that the data meet thorough quality standards and reproducibility benchmarks.
    • Make significant progress in the development and implementation of advanced bioinformatics pipelines for spatial transcriptomics data analysis tailored to neurodegenerative diseases.
    • Stay at the forefront of spatial transcriptomics technology and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and refine experimental protocols tailored to the complexities of neurodegenerative diseases.

We’d love to hear from you if:

    • You have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Genomics).
    • You have a minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral research or industry experience with a strong emphasis on spatial transcriptomics, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.
    • You have a proven expertise in spatial transcriptomics techniques, including sample preparation, sequencing, and data analysis.
    • You are proficient in bioinformatics tools and programming languages commonly used in genomics research (e.g., R, Python).
    • You have a strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases.
    • You have excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • You can work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • You demonstrated leadership and mentorship abilities.
    • Not required for consideration, but considered as a plus:
    • You have multi-modal microscopy experience.
    • You have IHC experience from sample preparation to imaging.
    • You have process automation experience.
$155,000 - $175,000 a year
Base salary ranges will be determined by the candidate's level, qualifications, skill set, and experience.
