Associate Scientist, Target Discovery and Genomics ~ Neurology

South San Francisco, CA
Target Discovery & Genomics /
Full-time /
On-site
Our mission is to develop therapies that empower the immune system to combat neurodegeneration and our team is focused on developing treatments for some of the most challenging diseases facing our society. We are supported in this mission by experienced and accomplished scientists and clinicians, a novel portfolio of programs, leading healthcare investors, and pharma company partners, who share in our commitment to bettering the lives of patients and realizing a world where we make brain disorders history

As an Associate Scientist in our Target Discovery and Genomics team, you will play a key role in supporting our research pipeline with a wide range of experiments and help to translate great science into exceptional drugs. You will work closely with other scientists to generate a wide range of multi-omic and imaging datasets critical for our target discovery platform and all our research programs. You will apply your existing technical skills to carry out analyses central to Alector’s scientific effort - and learn new skills along the way. You will be influential in championing and developing Alector’s culture and discovery strategy. Note that this is a lab-based role that requires full time, on-site work at our South San Francisco headquarters.

During the first year, your goals will include:

    • Performing bench work such as isolation of multiple cell types from CNS tissue, library preparation and single cell genomics.
    • Optimize cell cultures protocols for functional assays.
    • Keep track of existing and novel methods and introduce them when appropriate.
    • Generating primary data and communicating the analyses verbally and in writing to teammates.

We'd love to hear from you if:

    • You have experience in generating high quality transcriptomic data including cell isolation, RNA extraction and library preparation for both bulk and single cell RNA sequencing.
    • You have experience with different microscopy platforms and some image analysis knowledge.
    • You have proven your ability to plan, organize and implement studies independently with a large number of samples
    • You take pride in being persistent, self-motivated, efficient and extremely well organized
    • You thrive in an environment where we work in teams
    • You demonstrate a track record of learning new things and troubleshooting independently
    • You have a M.S. degree and at least 4 years of research experience at the bench in a relevant field or a 4-year degree and more than 8 years of lab experience in a related field

Not required for consideration, but considered a plus:

    • You have basic computational biology skills
    • You have worked with neuronal or microglial cells or brain tissues
    • You have experience in spatial transcriptomics
    • You have hands-on experience in FACS isolation of multiple different CNS cell types
    • You have a working knowledge of CRISPR-based technologies
$110,000 - $120,000 a year
Base salary ranges will be determined by the candidate's level, qualifications, skill set, and experience.
