Theory Research

  • Please list anything else that could help us understand whether your background and skills are a good match. The most important categories are prior work experience and research outputs in other fields, but you can also list education, hobby projects, other accomplishments or recognition, non-technical writing, evidence of exceptional ability, or whatever else. If you think your resume covers everything, feel free to just write "See resume."
  • Prior work on AI Alignment: It's fine to leave this section blank because you haven't worked on AI alignment in the past. If you have, please list any prior work you've done on AI alignment. This could be anything from papers from a previous full-time job to short-form writing you did in your spare time.
  • Do you prefer to be considered for our theoretical or empirical hiring stream? We expect empirical hires to spend a large fraction of their time coding, but not theoretical hires. If you are not sure, put down your best guess. We use this for applicants suited to both roles as a tiebreaker to decide which stream to use first.
  • Would you be open to joining as a visiting researcher (1–3 months) before joining full-time? (Note: the intention of the visiting researcher position is to assess potential fit for a full-time role.)
  • When would you be available to join ARC full-time? We're currently only looking for applicants who can start before September 30, 2026.
  • If you are open to joining as a visiting researcher (1–3 months) before joining full-time, when would you be available for that?
  • Would you be able to work from our office in Berkeley, California?
  • Will you require visa sponsorship now or at any point in the future?
  • Application time constraints: if you are time constrained, please note here when you need us to get you a final decision by. By default, we aim to get a final decision back within 6 weeks of receiving an application.
  • How did you hear about us / this role?
  • Would you like us to share information about your application with similar organizations?
  • (Note: we do not expect you to write a cover letter - we were not able to edit the placeholder text in the box below.)
