Altarum Institute (Altarum) is a nonprofit organization with offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Arlington, VA; Silver Spring, MD; and Portland, ME. We improve the health of disenfranchised populations by combining our expertise in public health and health care delivery to address health disparities, improve programs, and build better systems of care. Our clients include various federal and state agencies as well as organizations in the philanthropic and private sectors. Areas of expertise within the Community Health group include behavioral health, food and nutrition, maternal and child health, and reproductive health. 

We are seeking an experienced Senior Qualitative Researcher for our Behavioral Health team to lead and engage in qualitative evaluation activities for a variety of projects. Our ideal candidate has experience leading program evaluations, mentoring analysts in qualitative methods, developing data collection tools to capture meaningful program data; conducting qualitative data analysis activities; and developing reports and other communications that synthesize and present findings in compelling ways for a broad range of audiences. Subject matter expertise in behavioral health and experience with project management and new business development also desired. 

Responsibilities

    • Apply advanced knowledge of qualitative methods to study design; collection, processing, and analysis of data; and interpretation of results. 
    • Apply principles of health equity into the design of data collection instruments, sampling approach, and data analysis. 
    • Consult with clients and project directors to define need or problem and analytic solutions. 
    • Design and lead qualitative data collection (interviews, focus groups), and analysis (coding and thematic analysis in NVivo)   
    • Independently review, prioritize and communicate requirements documentation; lead effort to determine requirements gathering strategy and methodology 
    • Provide mentorship to and oversee the work of junior analysts. 
    • Oversee components of research, conduct studies, and evaluate results to advise on or recommend solutions, using knowledge of public health principles and/or related disciplines or fields of specialization. 
    • Use unique and specialized subject matter knowledge and experience to formulate plans and manage project timelines and processes for completion. 
    • Collaborate with project managers and directors to lead analytic projects. Review, evaluate, and implement requests related to research, data analyses, and publications.  
    • Lead the development of written reports to communicate research findings to clients. 
    • Anticipate and resolve issues and problems with the requirements across project partners; facilitate successful resolution of conflicts.  
    • Assume ultimate responsibility for research project risk, quality, and deliverables over the project lifecycle  
    • Communicate concisely and effectively at all levels within the organization.  
    • Frame business development discussions and promote Altarum’s capabilities; motivate existing and potential clients to pursue new initiatives and tasks.  
    • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide proposal input, review, and general support for the department’s business development initiatives. 
    • Provide actionable and understandable information to laypersons and senior audiences; present research results at conferences, author blogs and articles to disseminate findings and demonstrate thought leadership. 

Qualifications

    • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Health Services, or related social sciences field with relevant specialized training in qualitative methods. 
    • At least thirteen (13) years of directly related experience conducting qualitative data collection (interviews, focus groups, case studies) and analysis using qualitative software. 
    • At least five (5) years of experience leading qualitative research projects 
    • Ability to excel in a team-based work environment; interest and experience mentoring others.  
    • Excellent written communication skills with ability to develop evaluation reports and products that effectively communicate findings to a variety of different audiences. 
    • Strong analytical/critical thinking skills and knowledge of qualitative research and evaluation methods and design 
    • Content area knowledge and experience related to federal and state funded behavioral healthprograms preferred. 
    • Experience evaluating policy, systems and environmental change strategies, and community-based interventions desired. 
    • Experience in project management, new business development, and proposal writing strongly preferred. 
    • Proficiency in all basic Microsoft Office software applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). 
    • Proficiency in qualitative analysis programs (NVivo).   
    • Experience designing and producing effective data visualizations and research reports.  

Logistical Requirements

    • At this time we will only accept candidates who are presently eligible to work in the United States and will not require sponsorship.
    • Our organization requires that all work, for the duration of your employment, must be completed in the continental U.S. unless required by contract.
    • If you are local to our offices in Arlington, Silver Spring, Ann Arbor, or Portland this role will be hybrid.
    • Must be able to work during eastern time unless approved by your manager.
