Overview:
The Operating Technician is a 12-hour rotating shift job operating the Torrance polystyrene plant on a shift with two other operating technicians. Job requires knowledge and use of computer operating (DCS) system, knowledge and use of a work station, use of the computerized maintenance work order system, minor maintenance on shift, and the ability to safely and responsibly operate the plant using standard operating procedures and work processes.

Primary Responsibilities:

    • Performing routine operation of basic control systems and devices to monitor levels, temperatures, pressures and flow rates and transfer of products.
    • Using troubleshooting skills to resolve process, product quality, safety, and environmental problems.
    • Following operating discipline, procedures and practices to ensure a safe and efficient operation of assigned duties.
    • The control, monitoring and adjustment of all control systems and manually operated equipment.
    • Quality control testing associated with the polymerization processes and verification of lab equipment performance with reference polymers.
    • Identification of equipment requiring maintenance.
    • Clearing and tagging equipment as required, and issuing Safe Work Permits for maintenance and project work.
    • Ensures procedures are valid and up to date.
    • Participate internal and external audits.
    • Acting as a resource for other Operators and/or Technicians on job tasks and prioritization of work activities.
    • Performing tasks assigned per task list.
    • Accurately completing all required paperwork.
    • Performing all duties with a high degree of dedication to safety and environmental stewardship.
    • High degree of safety awareness and willingness to follow all safety standards.

Job Requirements:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
    • Work involves climbing stairs and ladders.
    • Must be able to work at heights.
    • Must be able to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
    • Preferred:  Experience working in chemical refining or industrial plant setting; Experience in a continuous chemical process

Other Information:

    • This position is part of Torrance manufacturing organization, and is located at the polystyrene plant in Torrance, California.  Relocation assistance is not authorized for this position.
    • Grade and salary level offered to the successful candidate will be appropriate to the job duties and commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
    • The work schedule for this position is a rotating 12-hour shift working nights, weekends and holidays. The successful candidate will be expected to work some overtime.  
$60,500 - $64,500 a year
Salary range: $60,500 - $64,500/year - Commensurate with relevant experience
