Amyris is seeking an experienced Associate Director in Process Development to manage biomolecule projects within Process Development and initial Manufacturing with an integrated view of the process to meet the project goals & manufacturing timelines. The Associate Director will partner with teams in upstream Research and Development and downstream Manufacturing and Commercialization to take new biomolecule products and processes from lab to early commercial scale.
Responsibilities:
- Display personal responsibility for individual as well as co-worker safety and maintaining safety as the highest priority by supporting and reinforcing procedures and policies.
- Develop relationships with and manage the outsourcing of pilot-scale fermentation, recovery, and/or purification operations. This will involve the contracting, scheduling, and coordination of campaign oversight with the technical staff.
- Work with technical area experts to define and review plans for achieving PD & Manufacturing related technical goals and milestones for biomolecule projects. Advocate for resourcing to support plans and project timelines.
- Maintain, update, and communicate project timelines and potential risks to the timeline.
- Coordinate and prioritize process development activities to align with project timeline, product specifications, cost target, and prepare for technology transfer.
- Partner with upstream R&D leads and PD leads in Fermentation, Downstream, Processing, and Process Chemistry to develop an integrated strain and process to meet project objectives.
- Work with the Process Engineering team develop cost models for new biomolecules and refine the models as the project progresses to manufacturing.
- Lead technical transfer of processes to manufacturing and coordinate manufacturing support. Work with Amyris Process Engineering and Manufacturing teams to understand the capabilities and constraints of selected manufacturing sites and how to best fit the new processes to the site(s).
- Interface and coordinate activities with Amyris Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Commercial and Supply Chain teams to successfully transfer new products and processes to manufacturing.
- Lead technical communication with external partners and customers as it relates to process development and initial manufacturing campaigns.
- Work with partners/customers to define the product specifications for new biomolecules.
- Travel will vary but could be as much as 25% on average.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering or related discipline with 12+ years of relevant industry or equivalent
- 5 plus years experience process technology development and/or implementation
- 2 plus years experience leading teams developing processes and subsequently transferring those processes to full-scale manufacturing facilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree, Masters or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or related discipline
- Hands on practice with many of the most commonly used unit operations in fermentation and downstream processing – centrifugation, filtration, evaporation & distillation, chromatography, adsorption, and crystallization – is highly desired.
- Experience in the management of CMOs is critical for the successful candidate.
- Prowess in technology transfer and understanding issues of process fit and timing when scaling up lab processes to pilot and commercial scale is essential.
- Experience writing Development Reports, SOP’s and Technology Transfer Reports and following through the transfer in person during the plant start-up.
- Previous Project Management Professional training is desirable.

The annual pay range for this role is $162500 to $242500. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis, and will vary based on the candidate’s skills, depth of experience and specific work location. This role is also eligible for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
