About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Physical Designer with at least 3 years of experience in physical design and documentation of substations and related infrastructure. This role involves supporting the layout, development, and integration of high-voltage equipment within substations, ensuring compliance with spacing requirements, safety standards, and client specifications.
What You’ll Do:
- Create and modify 2D and 3D physical layout drawings for substations using CAD and BIM software, ensuring adherence to client-specific and regulatory standards.
- Prepare, review, and adjust equipment arrangement drawings, grounding plans, and general layout documents using tools such as AutoCAD, Bentley Open Utility Substation, and other industry-standard applications.
- Perform technical analysis related to equipment spacing, clearances, and mechanical integration in line with project and code requirements.
- Produce and revise physical layout drawings, general arrangements, conduit routing plans, cable trench plans, grounding plans, and equipment installation details.
- Ensure compliance with American technical standards and codes (e.g., IEEE, NESC, ANSI, NFPA 70 (NEC), NEMA, OSHA) across all design deliverables.
- Communicate directly with engineering leads and project managers to define and interpret project scopes and execute detailed instructions.
- Learn, manage, and implement specialized software related to substation physical design and electromechanical systems.
- Contribute to the development of physical and grounding layouts for substations, including integration with PV and BESS systems where applicable.
- Support the preparation of technical studies and layout optimizations based on project-specific needs.
- Coordinate and supervise engineering tasks within multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment across civil, structural, and electrical disciplines.
- Ensure adherence to quality requirements and collaborate closely with the Quality Assurance team to maintain project standards
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Minimum 3 years in substation physical design or similar high-voltage infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with substation equipment, grounding systems, and physical layout best practices is highly desirable.
- Education: Degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Languages: Spanish, Advanced English.
- CAD/BIM Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D/3D, AutoCAD Electrical, and Revit is desirable. Experience with Bentley Open Utility Substation, MicroStation, SolidWorks and Inventor.
- Familiarity with ETAP for reviewing or supporting electrical studies (short-circuit, load flow, protection coordination).
- Knowledge of WinIGS or CYMGRD for grounding grid design or validation.
- Familiarity with protective relays and AC/DC control schemes to support coordination with protection engineers.
- Experience with solar PV utility-scale projects, inverter integration, and MV collector system layout is highly desirable.
- Previous participation in EPC or interconnection projects involving renewables or transmission infrastructure.
- High attention to detail and strong commitment to technical quality.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and collaborative workflows.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet technical deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with a technical and professional tone.
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure to meet tight project deadlines without compromising technical accuracy or quality.
$2,500 - $3,000 a month
Salary:
50,000-60,000 MXN Pesos Gross Monthly
