Summary:

Age of Learning’s Curriculum Team is the driving force behind the student-facing content in all the company’s educational products, including products such as ABCmouse.com, My Math Academy, and My Reading Academy.  Our commitment to designing learning activities of the highest quality has made Age of Learning products some of the top-ranking educational apps in the U.S.

As part of the Curriculum Planning and Design (CPD) team, Curriculum Specialists work closely with other team members to conduct, synthesize, and present research to stakeholders; work directly with CPD leadership to apply research to curriculum plans and designs; collaborate with a team of talented educators, game designers, artists, animators, engineers, and producers to develop the digital learning experiences, and more.

This position reports to the VP of Curriculum Planning & Design and focuses on researching, planning, and designing mathematics learning for children in grades 3-8. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of upper elementary and secondary math, particularly as it relates to the ways young learners develop their mathematics foundations in anticipation of learning algebra..  This person also exhibits commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills. This person thrives within a fast-paced, ever-evolving work environment and is comfortable both collaboratively and independently. 

Responsibilities:

    • Analyze standards and frameworks for grades 3-8 mathematics and unpack them into their component learning objectives.
    • Collaborate with curriculum team members to develop detailed knowledge maps that describe the concepts, principles, and skills needed for a learner to demonstrate mastery of math topics (e.g., identifying precursor, successor, and correlational relationships). 
    • Write clear, detailed, and precise specifications for the development of engaging digital learning activities. 
    • Contribute to user testing for activity concepts related to math for grades 3-5.
    • Review activities for developmental appropriateness and instructional integrity.
    • Work in an organized and flexible manner to meet established deadlines and evolving priorities.
    • Collaborate with curriculum team members to develop detailed knowledge maps that describe the concepts, principles, and skills needed for a learner to demonstrate mastery of mathematics topics (e.g., identifying precursor, successor, and correlational relationships). 
    • Write clear, detailed, and precise specifications for the development of engaging digital learning activities. 
    • Clearly communicate curriculum design and instructional content ideas and concepts when collaborating and when writing
    • Work cross-functionally with product stakeholders and production teams including game-designers, artists, engineers, product owners, etc.
    • Learn and apply Age of Learning best practices for curriculum planning and design, and instructional approaches
    • Work in an organized and flexible manner to meet established deadlines and evolving priorities.

Required Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 5+ years teaching math in grades ranging from 3 to 8
    • Extensive experience in curriculum planning and design in the area of mathematics (e.g., planning at the classroom, district, or state-wide level; planning and design for commercial curriculum developers, etc.)
    • Deep understanding of the ways in which upper elementary (and secondary) students become mathematically literate, as well as the challenges students experience when learning to understand and perform mathematics, especially as it pertains to the mathematics taught in grades 3 through 8
    • Demonstrable deep understanding of mathematics content area knowledge, as well as pedagogical expertise related to upper elementary and secondary grades mathematics instruction
    • Experience conducting analyses of concepts, principles, skills, and data used to inform curriculum development
    • Effectively synthesize and apply vast bodies of research to curriculum planning and design tasks, with the ability to clearly synthesize, articulate, and communicate this research to others
    • Exemplary writing skills with an emphasis on clarity, organization, and precision
    • Exemplary communication and collaboration skills
    • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in the field of education, with an emphasis on mathematics instruction, or degree in a mathematics related field

Desired Qualifications:

    • Minimum 2 years developing commercial/published curriculum, experience with digital preferred, including experience designing or developing interactive educational programs/applications 
    • Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in curriculum and instruction, mathematics education, or another related field
    • Specialized training/experience as an elementary or secondary mathematics intervention specialist
