About Apollo Agriculture:
Apollo Agriculture is the commercial farming platform for small-scale farmers that helps farmers maximize their profits. Apollo uses agronomic machine learning, remote sensing, and mobile phones to deliver financing, high-quality farm products, and optimized advice that can more than double farm profitability, starting in Kenya. Our team brings together technology and operations experience from The Climate Corporation (acquired for USD ~$1 Billion), Acre, ING, Google, and One Acre Fund. We value evangelical pursuit of mission with a pragmatic approach, humility in the face of challenge, active discussion of disagreements, and considerate listening.

About the Role
Apollo is seeking an exceptional Devops Engineer to help us build and mature our infrastructure we need to continue our rapid growth. Our engineering team, data science, and data warehousing teams have grown ~3x over the last year and we know we need to commit substantially to our tooling to continue growing.

You’ll own the evolution of our software infrastructure and development process. We’ve historically embraced a “Keep it Simple” approach to this point in terms of our architecture, but are looking to improve the fundamentals across technology teams. The Devops team will fundamentally own our cloud infrastructure (we use AWS), configuration management, builds, deployment, logging and monitoring management. You’ll work in concert with our IT team on security, networking, and the couple other pieces that straddle IT and infrastructure. You’ll eventually be expected to share an oncall rotation for the core pieces of infrastructure, but applications and services will have their own oncall rotations.

You have

    • Significant experience in Devops/SRE/other infrastructure roles at a fast growing technology company. We know these titles are highly fluid, we’re not pattern matching on exact title but looking for similar roles
    • Experience working with a major cloud provider and a sense of the costs and benefits of various cloud tools. We use AWS, but could definitely work with someone with experience in GCP/Azure who wants to transition.
    • Have a baseline understanding of security. You don’t have to be excellent at cryptography research but should have some sense of common security pitfalls in applications and infrastructure. The OWASP top 10 should be familiar.
    • Have experience using some sort of configuration management tooling. We currently use Ansible, but we could be persuaded to migrate our relatively small set of playbooks to Chef/Puppet if you’re an expert. (If you’re an immutable builds only person, we still want to talk to you)
    • Have strong linux skills. (e.g., You may have been asked at a family gathering to stop talking about systemd or why the command line is actually more powerful than a GUI.)
    • Bonus: Have experience with logging and/or monitoring. (We use ELK for logging and grafana/influx for metrics.)
    • Bonus: Strong Networking experience. (AWS Route Tables and NATs, not meetups and linkedin.)
    •  Bonus: Telecom experience (we run one of the largest call centers in Kenya. If you have opinions on voice codecs, we’d like to talk to you.)
