A Bit About Us
We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a science company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to transform evolutionary innovations into real-world solutions by openly developing more efficient, replicable, and sustainable ways to leverage the biology of diverse organisms. We expect scientists at Arcadia to openly publish their research in written form as clearly and expediently as possible to accelerate feedback and progress.

The Opportunity
Arcadia is a combined platform company and biotech start-up incubator. The experimental engineering function within Arcadia involves creative and iterative implementation of scientific tools to solve biological research problems, with a particular focus on developing user-friendly, scalable solutions for the most critical and widely-used research tools in the company.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Molecular Engineering Research Associate to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques, with a particular focus on microbiology and cell culture. This role involves conducting experiments under the direction of senior scientists, maintaining microbial cultures, preparing reagents, assisting with protein production, and contributing to the development of innovative genetic engineering projects.

Responsibilities

    • Execute genetic engineering experiments, including genome editing, transformation, and transfection of cells, with an initial focus on microbial species
    • Maintain and expand microbial culture collections, identifying and ensuring optimal growth conditions and genetic stability
    • Prepare and sterilize reagents, media, and other laboratory supplies necessary for genetic engineering workflows
    • Support protein production efforts by preparing buffers, lysates, and conducting gel chromatography analyses
    • Collect, analyze, and record experimental data with high accuracy and attention to detail
    • Collaborate with research teams to develop and optimize protocols for microbial genetic manipulation
    • Assist in troubleshooting experimental challenges and implementing solutions to improve laboratory processes
    • Ensure compliance with biosecurity and safety protocols within the laboratory environment

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus
    • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in a molecular biology or genetic engineering laboratory setting, including at least 6 months of full-time industry experience
    • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, and cloning
    • Experience with microbial culture techniques and genetic modification methods, such as electroporation, conjugation, and CRISPR-Cas9
    • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools for sequence analysis and gene editing design is desirable
    • Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic setting, preferably in start-ups
    • An excellent verbal and written science communicator for both general and technical audiences. We expect all scientists to actively draft and openly publish their lessons
    • Experience working with cross-functional teams with different working styles and types of expertise. Experience using project management software (Airtable, Monday, Asana, Notion) is a strong plus
Interested applicants should apply using the link below and include a CV, brief cover letter, and answer the required supplemental questions.

The expected salary range is $80,000-$95,000 per year with generous equity and benefits, depending on experience level. The position will require the individual to be on-site at our Berkeley, California headquarters. We will review applications on a rolling basis, and the job will remain open until the position is filled.
