A Bit About Us
We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a for-profit biology research and development company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to give a community of researchers the freedom and tools to be adventurous, to discover, and to make scientific exploration financially self-sustaining in the life sciences. We are inspired by the spirit of exploration and aspire to evolve how science is done, who it attracts and rewards, and what it can achieve.

The Opportunity
We are seeking an extraordinary and experienced Director of Operations to lead our operations team as we rapidly grow as an organization. Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated and strategic systems thinker who will help us develop structures and processes as we scale to an organization of approximately 150 people over the next five years. We are seeking a masterful generalist with a demonstrable bias toward action and successfully getting things done. As our Director of Operations, you will quickly gather information and apply your keen eye for detail to help prioritize needs and make critical decisions. You are good at managing and training a rapidly evolving team of people. While you are able to delegate work effectively, you are not above rolling up your sleeves to do the hard work yourself when need be. You will be a thought partner for our CEO, leveraging prior experiences to creatively solve problems and increase efficiencies so that we can pursue ambitious, curiosity-driven science in a fundamentally new way. Our future Director of Operations is not only a first-principles thinker but is also proactive and effective at quickly creating concrete, actionable strategies that help translate concepts into reality. The expected salary range is $150-250k per year with equity and benefits, depending on experience level.

We want someone with deep experience in scaling teams in tech or biotech. You must be adept at managing many complex and fast-paced projects. We need both your passion for scientific utility and translation and your pragmatic hands-on business experience.

In the first month, you will actively seek to gain a deep understanding of the Arcadia mission, vision, scientific goals, infrastructural needs, and current team members. By better understanding our current operations and team, you will help map out immediate next steps to address our most pressing needs. These will likely include creating more efficient and well-thought-out processes for recruitment, lab operations, and HR. You will be charged with proposing how you will grow and manage the ops team to support these efforts.

In the first three months, you will start to implement improvements to the ways in which we operate at Arcadia, working collaboratively with our CEO. You will drive strategy and help scale efforts for many aspects of Arcadia’s operations, including HR, IT, project management, recruitment, laboratory operations, finance, and community outreach. You will work across the entire organization to understand each group’s needs as we add more scientists, entrepreneurs, and administrators to our team and support our healthy growth. You will also be in charge of communicating and maintaining these processes across the organization.

In the first year, you'll know the ins and outs of Arcadia and will be able to keep all areas of the company running smoothly, while anticipating problems, and planning for our future along with our senior leadership team. You will be known as someone who gets stuff done seamlessly, solves problems efficiently, and is a stable backbone for all that we do. You will be appreciated for both your steadiness and stability, as well as your ability to manage the rapid iteration that happens in any startup as it scales.

Education/experience:
-BA/BS degree or higher
-A background in the sciences, preferably the life sciences, and at least 5 years of progressively responsible and relevant work experience
-Management experience and an understanding of the breadth of operational needs that span a startup in the sciences

The Director of Operations can expect to be compensated between $150,000 - $250,000 annually with benefits and equity based on experience. The position will require the individual to be on-site at our Berkeley, California headquarters.
