Scientist, Technology Teams
San Francisco Bay Area /
A Bit About Us:
We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a well-funded for-profit biology research and development company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to give a community of researchers the freedom and tools to be adventurous, to discover, and to make scientific exploration financially self-sustaining in the life sciences. We are inspired by the spirit of exploration and aspire to evolve how science is done, who it attracts and rewards, and what it can achieve.
There are over one trillion species on this planet. Each of these presents an unparalleled opportunity to ask how evolution has solved problems, holding the keys to the greatest technology we have — biology itself. Yet, this technology remains remarkably underexplored. At Arcadia, we will bring together scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to unlock this potential by pursuing discovery-based research across diverse organisms. We will invest in the development of enabling research tools that can supercharge expansion into new organisms by the broader scientific community. Translational opportunities that emerge from our research will be commercialized to sustain and fuel our continued exploration across a wider slice of biology.
Research @ Arcadia:
At Arcadia, we are building an intramural research and development program that will encompass three areas: (1) emerging organismal biology, (2) enabling research technologies, and (3) translational development. Research areas will be carried out by independent scientists and scientist-led research teams. Arcadia research teams will be small in size, collaborative in nature, and charged with the exciting responsibility to pursue science that is more high-risk and exploratory than typical life science research programs. We will invest heavily in creative technology teams that can invent new research tools or engineer workflows that are currently optimized for model organismal systems. Strategic coordination between teams will be key for maximizing these investments. In addition to leading teams, Arcadia scientists will be driving engagement with the broader scientific community in order to maximize the impact of our work and identify research areas and needs that Arcadia may be uniquely positioned to address.
Over the next year, we are looking to hire four full-time technology scientists to launch research efforts in developing new technologies and implementation of Scientists will also be expected to participate in the recruitment of associated team members. Team sizes will be determined based on project needs as well as management experience. Compensation will be based on excellence in one of at least three areas: execution, strategy, or management. We encourage applicants to consider their optimal roles in these areas, as compensation at Arcadia will not be preferentially based on one area over others. If you are unsure of your optimal role at Arcadia, we strongly encourage you to apply to initiate a discussion over this.
We are recruiting scientists who are excited to pursue either the development of innovative, advanced technologies, or to work with other Acadians to implement these technologies to advance Arcadia's biological exploration. We are keen to develop tools in areas including but not limited to metabolomics, proteomics, genomics, data science, gene-editing, advanced computation (representation learning), engineering, biochemistry, chemical biology, advanced imaging, and high-throughput workflows. We are especially interested in combining technologies to push the boundaries of what can be measured or observed. For example, we would be excited to recruit someone motivated to collaborate with our advanced imaging team to add a spatial component to their technology.
Our ideal technology scientist is curious, self-directed, collaborative, excited by new ideas, passionate about solving problems, and dedicated to open science. You enjoy thinking about how to connect the dots between disparate disciplines. You are motivated by team-based efforts and know how to manage a wide range of risk. You are not afraid to fail and will help us think about ways to not only normalize but celebrate it. You are excited by the possibility of translating your research into useful tools or companies, when such opportunities arise. You understand that skilled and thoughtful mentorship is critical to maximizing the scientific potential of our science and organization. You see Arcadia as an opportunity to experiment with not only what science you do but how you do it, and you understand the importance of curiosity and humility in this process. Scientists can expect to be compensated between $75,000-$200,000/year depending on experience, plus benefits and a highly competitive equity offering. We are looking for talent at all levels from a wide variety of scientific and professional backgrounds.
What your role will look like over time:
First year. Over the next several months, you can expect a very start-up experience with a small organization of scientists that will grow from a size of about 10 people to 25. We expect the growing organization to be highly collaborative with an “all-hands-on-deck” mentality to get new research projects off the ground, quickly explore and de-risk organismal systems or technologies, and engage with the broader scientific community to source ideas. Technology teams will be small in size (1-5) and coordinate closely with core service teams. During this time, you will establish collaborations with fellow Arcadians and outside groups. You will also be strategizing future projects.
First few years. After Arcadia becomes a little more established, you will be expected to be the lead the development or implementation of new technologies needed to support life sciences in emerging non-model systems. Successful projects may develop into longer-term research programs or spin-out companies, and you may have the opportunity to lead these depending on performance and interest.
Interested applicants should send your professional CV and a one-page cover letter describing (1) a brief narrative of your own scientific background, (2) what you would like to build, develop, or invent next and why, (3) your unique scientific superpower and how you think it would be best utilized and (4) your longer-term career goals.
The Arcadia Story:
We are a research and development company leveraging the biology of emerging research organisms. We were founded by Seemay Chou and Prachee Avasthi, scientists convinced there is a better way to explore the full potential of science: how discoveries can be both meaningful and profitable. We are building a team of in-house scientists to carry out active research programs and convene a broader scientific community with a visiting scholars and internship program. Read more about our mission here, FAQs here, and Seemay’s founding story here.
Arcadia Science is an equal opportunity workplace; we welcome people from all backgrounds and communities. We provide competitive compensation and practical benefits to keep you happy and healthy so that you can do your best work.
Not sure if this is you?
We are building a diverse team, with a broad range of experience, expertise, and perspectives. If you don’t meet all of the above qualifications, you should still consider applying to Arcadia. We carefully consider every application, and will either move forward with you, suggest another role within Arcadia that might be a better fit, keep in touch for future opportunities, or thank you for your time.
We want to ensure Arcadia is an environment that suits your working style and empowers you to do your best work, so we are eager to answer any questions that you have about us at any point in the interview process.
