We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Database Administrator (Postgres) to join our team at Artera. This role is critical in ensuring that our databases are secure, organized, and accessible, with a strong emphasis on maintaining database performance and availability. As our database expert, you will address database-related requests, maintain our infrastructure, and collaborate with various teams to ensure smooth operations.
This position requires a proactive individual who can work independently, solve complex problems, and suggest improvements to our current database architecture. Occasional late evening work will be necessary to handle critical alerts and maintenance tasks.
Your expertise will be essential in supporting our DevOps team and keeping our projects on track by managing database tickets and requests. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of our database systems, ultimately contributing to the overall success and scalability of our platform.
Responsibilities
- Database Management: Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Postgres databases, ensuring they are secure, organized, and accessible.
- Incident Response: Respond to database-related requests and alerts, resolving issues within established SLAs.
- Architecture: Learn and understand the existing database architecture and how it interacts with our server infrastructure.
- Documentation: Maintain and update database documentation, runbooks, and response procedures to reflect the current state of the architecture.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Platform Engineering, Security, and Data teams to address database needs and improve system interactions.
- Maintenance Planning: Assist in planning and executing database maintenance tasks, including upgrades and component replacements.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and propose enhancements to the database architecture and related processes.
- Project Support: Provide consulting and support for DevOps and Engineering projects, leveraging your database expertise.
- Team Meetings: Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions about database management and infrastructure improvements.
- Task Management: Efficiently manage and close out database tickets and requests as they come in, improving response times as you gain familiarity with the system.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in STEM preferred *additional experience is also accepted in lieu of a degree*
- Proven experience in managing Postgres databases.
- Strong general knowledge of Linux/Unix system administration.
- Experience with cloud-hosted database solutions (AWS preferred)
- Ability to respond to and resolve database-related incidents in a timely manner.
- Strong ability to document best practices, procedures, and database configurations.
Bonus
- Familiarity with scripting languages for automation tasks.
- Experience with DevOps automation and CI/CD concepts.
- Any relevant certifications related to networking and security.
$139,000 - $204,000 a year
The compensation for this role will be based on level of experience and the geographic tier in which you are located. This position also comes with equity and a variety of benefits.
Tier 1 Salary: $155,000 - $204,000
Non-Tier 1 Salary: $139,000 - $183,000
LOCATION
Artera values in-person collaboration and is currently hiring in the following US cities: Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Francisco/Bay Area, Kansas City, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia (Wayne).
Artera HQ is in Santa Barbara, CA, with an additional US office located in Philadelphia (Wayne), PA. If you live in the Santa Barbara or Philadelphia area, your role will be hybrid, and you will be expected to work out of your designated office location regularly, following local office guidelines. While three days a week may be a general guideline, the specific requirement will be set regionally based on the needs of the local office and the role.
If you live in one of our other hubs, your role will be remote to start. As our team continues to grow in these cities, Artera will explore opening offices in these locations, but there is currently no timeline in place for that. Once that happens, in-office attendance will similarly follow regional expectations, with flexibility to align with the local office's norms and the specific job requirements.
