About the role

The Director of Data Engineering plays a key leadership role in building a modern, scalable, high-performance data platform to power Avalere Health’s analytics and marketing capabilities. You’ll oversee the architecture and development of robust data pipelines and integrations across platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Snowflake, while supporting key business initiatives across Media, Analytics, CRM, and Martech platforms. You will manage a team of data engineers, guide platform architecture, and lead cross-functional delivery that enables marketing activation, media insights, CRM optimization, and Next Best Engagement. This role is both strategic and hands-on—requiring a deep understanding of media, marketing tech, and scalable data systems. 

 3–5 years of media or agency-side experience is essential to success in this role, as is familiarity with CRM and Martech platform integrations to support marketing personalization and automation efforts.

What you'll do

    • Application Support & Platform Leadership:
    • Lead application support services for data analytics platforms such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, and others
    • Manage internal engineering teams and partner with external vendors to ensure operational excellence and platform reliability
    • Oversee day-to-day support operations, break/fix routines, and performance monitoring of analytics tools and data platforms
    • Strategic Analytics Partnership:
    • Work in close collaboration with business leadership to define and execute the analytics agenda
    • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives by developing and monitoring performance metrics
    • Data Architecture & Engineering:
    • Lead the design and implementation of data architecture layers including ingestion, transformation, unification, and consumption
    • Support the development of analytics database structures, including tables, views, and schemas, ensuring scalability and performance
    • Execute efficient, well-documented SQL development for analytics and BI applications
    • Data Management & Analysis:
    • Gather, assess, and interpret data from transactional databases, operational data stores, external systems, and reporting environments
    • Maintain high standards of data quality, identifying and resolving data integrity issues in collaboration with IT and QA teams
    • Collaboration & Documentation:
    • Work cross-functionally with data scientists, business analysts, project managers, media operations, and QA teams to deliver holistic data solutions
    • Create and maintain thorough technical documentation of all data engineering processes and solutions
    • Actively contribute to code reviews and promote best practices in data engineering and development
    • Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, sustainability, and standardization in data workflows
    • Stay current with industry trends and lead the evaluation and adoption of new technologies and frameworks.
    • Support the implementation of data governance, compliance, and security best practices (HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA)
    • Risk Management & Quality Assurance:
    • Collaborate with QA teams to ensure data accuracy, robust test coverage, and ongoing quality improvements.
    • Identify risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement solutions to support data engineering objectives

About you

    • 4+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, including complex SQL and scalable architecture design 
    • 2+ years building ETL/ELT pipelines using tools like dbt, Airflow, and custom API integrations 
    • Strong experience with Snowflake, GCP (BigQuery), and PostgreSQL 
    • Working knowledge of CRM and Martech platform integrations, including audience segmentation and personalization workflows (e.g., Salesforce, Adobe Experience Platform, HubSpot, etc.) 
    • 3–5 years of experience working within media, marketing, or advertising agency environments 
    • Proficient in using Git, CI/CD pipelines, and development best practices 
    • Experience in data modeling, data warehousing, and large-scale architecture 
    • Deep familiarity with data governance, cloud security, and IAM frameworks 
    • Advanced skill in SQL and data visualization platforms (Looker, Tableau, Power BI) 
    • Clear communicator with experience engaging technical and business stakeholders 
    • Familiarity with marketing and media platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, DV360, Campaign Manager, Meta Ads) 
    • Strong understanding of healthcare data compliance (HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA) 
    • Experience in Agile/Waterfall hybrid teams and enterprise software delivery 
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience 
$150,000 - $170,000 a year
