Role

As Avela's Data and Algorithms lead, you’ll have your hand in everything, from advising our clients to architecting our product to marketing to our prospects. Your primary role will be working with our Principal Economists and Customer Service Team to help our customers improve their enrollment and admission practices. This might include analyzing student and school outcomes data or reviewing enrollment preferences and lottery results.

This role is an exciting hybrid between:

50% Data and Algorithms:
-- Data Analysis (30%),
-- Market/Algorithm Design (10%),
-- Product Management (10%),

50% Other:
-- Strategy Consulting and Advising (15%)
-- Customer Success/Support (15%),
-- Sales / Marketing (15%),
-- Other Random Stuff (5%).

Responsibilities

    • Data Analysis - You’ll extract insights from a wide range of data in support of both our client engagements and product development. This could include reviewing past application and enrollment data to identify opportunities for improvement, or forecasting future enrollment.
    • Market Design - You’ll work closely with Josh Angrist (Nobel Prize) and Parag Pathak (Clark Medal) to design markets for organizations, governments, and education institutions, such as enrollment lotteries or volunteer matching.
    • Algorithm Design - Then, you'll design the actual allocation mechanisms and market design algorithms to assign individuals. You'll often script these in Python, Stata, or other scripting language to test them out or run quick simulations.
    • Product Management - As our data and market design expert, you'll partner with our product team to implement these approaches directly in our product.
    • Customer Success - You’ll be the frontlines for our customers, supporting them with technical and programmatic issues.
    • Thought Leadership - As a subject matter expert, you’ll drive our thought leadership in the enrollment space, which includes writing blog entries, posting on social media, speaking at conferences, presenting webinars, and more.
    • Sales/Marketing - As a small team, everyone pitches in to help with sales and marketing, including the above thought leadership and also sales demos, cold emails, and lead generating.
    • Janitorial - As a growing startup, we need help across the board, from HR to finance to operations. Everyone pitches in to “take out the (proverbial) trash,” and nothing is “beyond your job description" or "below your paygrade."

Qualifications

    • 2+ Years of work experience as a data analyst, data scientist, economist, or business consultant
    • Degree in Economics, Statistics, Math, or Computer Science (MA or PhD preferred)
    • Excellent communicator, including written and oral
    • Capable of producing compelling slide presentations and reports
    • Customer-centric mindset and passion for education, equity, or social impact
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive, extraordinary comfort with ambiguity, enjoyment wearing many hats
    • Among the best at what you do with a growth mindset and desire to constantly improve
Company

Avela is an education technology startup focused on equity in education admissions and enrollment. We give enrollment, admission, and award officers the tools to make equitable decisions about the allocation of educational opportunities.

We work with school districts and charter networks across the country, including Oakland Enrolls, Tulsa Public Schools, Jersey City Board of Education, and New Orleans Public Schools. We also work with a range of nonprofits and NGOs, including Teach for America and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Our platform has four parts to cover each stage of the admission journey, from exploring options to applying and final selection and admission. Our flagship product, Avela Match, is used for running coordinated matching markets to assign individuals to programs, such as public school placements in choice districts. We also offer a range of consulting services to help districts implement enrollment reforms and advance equity in educational programs.
