Role Overview
Avero is seeking a hands-on Architect Team Lead to guide the modernization of our platform and lead the transition from legacy systems to cloud-native applications. This role is a player/coach position — you’ll spend part of your time writing code, building migration solutions, and reviewing designs, while also setting architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and coordinating with leadership.

You will initially lead a small architecture team (yourself plus one engineer) with the opportunity to grow the team over time as our modernization efforts expand. This is a chance to be both a builder and a leader, shaping the next generation of Avero’s platform.

This is a 100% remote position reporting to Avero’s Vice President of Engineering.

Who You Are

    • A senior engineer or architect with proven experience migrating legacy systems into modern cloud-native architectures
    • Comfortable rolling up your sleeves to write code, build proof-of-concepts, and debug complex systems
    • Experienced leading and mentoring engineers, with the ability to grow and develop a team
    • Pragmatic, able to balance technical vision with delivery needs
    • Skilled at working across product, engineering, and business stakeholders to align on solutions
    • A strong communicator who can explain tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences

What You'll Do

    • Lead the architectural design and hands-on migration of Avero’s legacy platform into cloud-native services
    • Write code, build reference implementations, and contribute to core migrations alongside the team
    • Manage and mentor a small architecture team, with plans to scale as Avero grows
    • Define and document architectural principles, patterns, and modernization roadmaps
    • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
    • Evaluate and adopt modern frameworks, platforms, and tools to accelerate modernization
    • Champion best practices for performance, scalability, security, and operational excellence
    • Partner with engineering leadership to prioritize technical debt reduction and long-term investments

Our Tech & Tools

    • You don’t need to be an expert in everything, but familiarity with several is expected.
    • Languages & Frameworks: Java, Python, Node.js (or similar backend technologies)
    • Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3), Terraform, Docker
    • Legacy Stack: Oracle, monolithic applications (experience in migrating from similar systems is highly valuable)
    • Modernization Tools: Kubernetes, containerization, serverless, CI/CD pipelines
    • Observability & Monitoring: Datadog, CloudWatch, or similar
    • Bonus: Experience with BI/Analytics platforms and SaaS multi-tenant architectures

What You'll Need

    • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in an architect or technical leadership role
    • Proven experience migrating legacy systems into cloud-native architectures
    • Hands-on expertise with AWS or another major cloud provider
    • Strong coding background (Java, Python, Node.js, or similar) and ability to guide implementation details
    • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and serverless computing
    • Experience mentoring engineers and leading cross-functional technical initiatives
    • Excellent communication skills in a distributed, remote-first environment
    • Bonus: Prior experience in SaaS or hospitality technology environments
